Sinopse

The debut story collection of Shawn Syms, who has been publishing short stories in various literary journals and anthologies for several years. His stories are powerful character studies about the sense of disorientation that can be experienced by people in crisis, and how society’s disenfranchised – from bullied kids to reformed sex abusers - struggle to find a place in the world to call their own. Shawn has a keen talent for making readers feel empathetic towards those who live outside of our comfort zone, from meth-addicted mothers to grown men who like to dress up like babies. There is humor, but there is also a sense that no matter different from our own experience, these characters have dignity and are worth knowing. Many of his stories are inspired by his previous work as a journalist. While this book covers a lot of terrain, Shawn identifies as gay, and many of his characters are LGBTQ.

This program is read by the author
dayliGht is a dazzling collection of poems from a necessary new voice, at once a clarion call for stories of Black women and a rebuke of broken notions of sexuality and race.
Growing up, Roya Marsh was considered "tomboy passing." With an affinity for baggy clothes, cornrows, and bandanas, she came of age in an era when the wide spectrum of gender and sexuality was rarely acknowledged or discussed. She knew she was "different," her family knew she was "different," but anything outside of the heteronorm was either disregarded or disparaged.
In her stunning debut, written in protest to an absence of representation, Marsh recalls her early life and the attendant torments of a butch Black woman coming of age in America. In lush, powerful, and vulnerable verses, dayliGht unpacks traumas to unearth truths, revealing a deep well of resilience, a cutting sense of irony, and an astonishing fresh talent.

Never Have I Ev . . . Wait, what was the question again?!What happens when an ill-advised party game makes it obvious I've still got my V-card? Embarrassment. A lot of embarrassment.Especially when the sexy, older guy at the party who witnessed the whole thing turns out to be someone I have to see every week. Not to mention my best friend's cousin. He's not only straight, but way out of my league. It's going to be so awkward for both us.Or awesome . . . if his protective nature and flirty attempts to teach me how to date lead to the kind of tutoring that lives in my fantasies. But how likely is that to happen? I'm not known as the sweet, naïve one among for my friends for nothing.I'm probably imagining those looks he throws my way. Probably projecting my own want onto his expression. But . . . what if I'm not?Contains mature themes.

In present-day New York, Margarita grapples with insecurities on her fifty-sixth birthday. She feels neglected by her husband, and suspects he's having an affair with one of his students. Mysteries surrounding two friends offer both a distraction and unexpected insight: Anne, the concierge of her apartment building, has suddenly vanished without a trace, leaving Anne's mother to confront a long-held secret. Juliana, now in her eighties, is eager to find the woman who changed the course of her life more than sixty years ago. With a seamless blend of reality and fiction, Carla Guelfenbein takes us back to the 1940s to provide answers, drawing on the intimate letters that Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral wrote to her lover and executor, Doris Dana, in the years after their first meeting at Barnard College. Struggling under the weight of Gabriela's intense attachment, the much younger Doris enjoys a passionate night of sex and alcohol with a childhood friend while they're apart.Far from the chaste, self-sacrificing image imposed on Mistral after her death because she never married, the characters of One in Me I Never Loved reflect womanhood in all its complexities, challenging the limits on their freedom and sexuality.

Jonathan Corcoran was the youngest and only son of three siblings in a family balanced on the precipice of poverty. His mother, a traditional, evangelical, and insular woman who had survived abuse and abandonment, was often his only ally. Together they navigated a strained homelife dominated by his distant, gambling-addicted father and shared a seemingly unbreakable bond. When Corcoran left home to attend Brown University, a chasm between his upbringing and his reality began to open. As his horizons and experiences expanded, he met the upper-middle-class Jewish man who would become his husband. But this authentic life would not be easy, and Corcoran was forever changed when his mother disowned him after discovering his truth. In the ensuing fifteen years, the two would come together only to violently spring apart. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged in 2020, the cycle finally ended when he received the news that his mother had died.In No Son of Mine, Corcoran traces his messy estrangement from his mother through lost geographies as well as the lost relationships with friends and family and the sense of home that were stripped away when she said he was no longer her son. Through grief, anger, questioning, and growth, Corcoran explores the entwined yet separate histories and identities of his mother and himself.
