Sinopse

After a tragic accident leaves her widowed, Netta flees home to Daunderhead hoping for the space to process her grief. Instead, she finds her cousin, Thorn, once like a brother to her, swimming at the bottom of every bottle he can find. Her parents, unable to break him from his alcoholic stupor, have grown despondent and resigned to his fate; and her once beautiful childhood home has fallen into the grasp of nefarious ghosts whose goals remain unclear. Refusing to allow another tragedy to befall her family, Netta takes it upon herself to help her cousin and—hopefully—stop the hauntings.

Whispering Willows is a place where wishes come true, but at what cost?

I didn't expect to be a widow at forty years old. I didn't expect to be a single mother. I didn't expect to inherit a mountain of debt. And I definitely didn't expect to return to Whispering Willows—or my life as a witch.

But here I am: I've reopened my mother's wish shop, started granting wishes, and am teaching my daughter magic.

    Life is perfect . . . Almost.

There's my ex, who's aged unfairly well and who also happens to be my daughter's teacher. My high school BFF, who has turned into a major bully. And then there's the golden lamp.

After I find it in the basement, strange things start happening: the random rain showers in my shop, the ruined wishes, the seagull who can suddenly sing (off-key) showtunes. Just when I think it can't get any weirder, I throw the lamp in the ocean, and it appears back in my shop the next day.

Something is trying to escape that lamp, and if I don't figure out what, our new beginning might be over before it's even started.

    Description:
The Bus Conductor is a masterclass in E.F. Benson’s subtle, psychological approach to horror—where the ordinary is twisted into something deeply uncanny. Set in the seemingly mundane world of early twentieth-century travel, the story follows a group of travelers whose routine journey becomes a confrontation with fate itself. Benson weaves dread not from spectacle, but from the creeping certainty of doom and the inevitability of death.
The horror is understated but relentless. A mysterious figure, the titular bus conductor, presides over events with a calm authority that masks a preternatural control over life and death. Benson builds tension through careful pacing, ordinary settings turned ominous, and the mounting realization that chance and human agency are powerless against certain cosmic forces.
Unlike the visceral menace of Howard, Benson’s terror is cerebral and inexorable—quietly illustrating the thin line between life and death, and the impossibility of escaping fate. His prose is elegant and precise, conveying fear through anticipation, atmosphere, and the inexorable approach of doom.
Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance heightens the story’s quiet tension, accentuating the sense of predestined horror and the chilling inevitability that defines Benson’s work. The Bus Conductorendures as a seminal piece of early twentieth-century supernatural fiction—where calm propriety masks death’s certainty, and the ordinary becomes terrifyingly unstoppable.
