Sinopse

Sergei Mikhailovich Goriainov (1849-1918) was a Russian historian, journalist, and Imperial Archivist at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His publications, primarily essays and articles, are based on his research in diplomatic archives and address issues of Russian history and foreign policy. His best-known work, The Bosphore and the Dardanelles, is a historical study of the Straits Question, based on diplomatic correspondence preserved in the St. Petersburg archives.Since the revolutionary events in Russia made documents from the archives of the Russian Foreign Ministry accessible to scholars, dating back much more recently than had been customary until then, Goriainov, as a former archivist of that ministry and later a senator, decided in 1918 to prepare for the American Historical Review, precisely on the basis of confidential materials discovered in those archives, the essay that we offer our readers today: The End of the Alliance of the Emperors. Some have speculated that his death, which occurred shortly after the publication of these shocking revelations, was not due to natural causes.

Apology by Plato is a crucial Socratic dialogue that provides an understanding of the philosopher's own views on the trial and execution of Socrates. The work serves as a defence speech given by Socrates as he attempts to persuade the court of his innocence. By providing an insight into his philosophical beliefs, Plato uses the Apology to articulate his teacher's thoughts on justice, virtue, piety and moral responsibility. Read in English, unabridged.

The Situation and the Story -...

All narrative writing must pull from the raw material of life a tale that will shape experience, transform event, deliver a bit of wisdom. In a story or a novel the "I" who tells this tale can be, and often is, an unreliable narrator but in nonfiction the reader must always be persuaded that the narrator is speaking truth.

How does one pull from one's own boring, agitated self the truth-speaker who will tell the story a personal narrative needs to tell? That is the question The Situation and the Story asks—and answers. Taking us on a tour of some of the best memoirs and essays of the past hundred years, Gornick traces the changing idea of self that has dominated the century, and demonstrates the enduring truth-speaker to be found in the work of writers as diverse as Edmund Gosse, Joan Didion, Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, or Marguerite Duras.

This book is itself a model of the lucid intelligence that has made Gornick one of our most admired writers of nonfiction. In it, she teaches us to write by teaching us how to read: how to recognize truth when we hear it in the writing of others and in our own.

    Specialized Therapies - Breaking...

This book contains three kinds of therapy:
Psychosexual Therapy - Psychosexual therapy is a specialized form of counseling designed to address psychological factors that impact a person's sexual health and intimacy. It explores the complex relationship between emotional well-being, physical health, and sexual experiences. Often, psychosexual therapy is sought by individuals or couples experiencing challenges in their sexual relationships, such as low libido, sexual dysfunction, or communication difficulties around intimacy.
Narrative Therapy - Narrative therapy is a therapeutic approach that views individuals as the authors of their own stories. This perspective emphasizes that people are not defined by their problems, but rather by the way they relate to and interpret their experiences. The central premise of narrative therapy is that we can rewrite our stories, even the ones shaped by challenges, in ways that empower us to lead fulfilling lives.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy - Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a collaborative, goal-directed approach to therapy that emphasizes finding solutions to clients' problems rather than focusing extensively on the problems themselves. This method arose in the 1980s, developed by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and their colleagues at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee. The therapy stands apart from traditional problem-focused therapies by its strength-based philosophy, its reliance on the client’s own resources, and its focus on the future rather than the past. It offers a clear, practical approach that fosters rapid change and is often used in a brief therapy setting, making it highly efficient for clients seeking to improve their situations in a short amount of time.

Poetry has always provided comfort, inspiration, and connection, especially during socially precarious and politically divisive times. That has never been truer than it is today. The Wild Edge of the Heart: Women Poets Raise Their Voices presents the work of some of our leading contemporary female poets who are lauded for their ferocity, sensitivity and eloquence.
With a foreword by iconic theater artist Anne Bogart, this diverse and distinct array of voices includes Francesca Bell, Michelle Bitting, Joshua Jennifer Espinoza, Alexis Rhone Fancher, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Tanya Ko Hong, Armine Iknadossian, Sue Ellen Kuzma, Danusha Lameris, Kitty O’Meara, Mirabai Starr and Nancy Lynée Woo. Uniting these award-winning poets is the daring of their expression: they are fearless, unapologetically outspoken and insistent on being heard.
The poems chosen for this collection depict personal narratives, outcries, revelations, tender fleeting moments, declarations of sovereignty, and the mythic imagination: from a stark, visceral portrayal of the Black body’s agonizing experience of terror, trauma and loss, to the intensely erotic on display, to grieving the intimacy of touch in the height of pandemic-isolation, and the longing for ecstasy even in the darkest of times. The poems invite us into multi-sensory worlds in which Joan of Arc speaks to the sea, a father struggles to see his young transgender daughter for who she is, and a mother communes with her deceased child to grant and seek forgiveness.
By shining a light on our shared human experience, The Wild Edge of The Heart: Women Poets Raise Their Voices reminds us of our innate beauty and interconnectedness.
Proceeds will be donated to the NIRH to support women’s reproductive health.
Produced by Susan Lambert & Walker Vreeland.
