  Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy that teaches how to live a good life, one filled with virtue, wisdom, and tranquility. Founded by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BCE, Stoicism is built on the idea that the key to happiness and fulfillment lies not in external circumstances, but in how we choose to respond to them. The philosophy emphasizes the development of self-control, rational thought, and resilience in the face of adversity. While it originated in ancient Greece, Stoicism has influenced many philosophers and continues to resonate with modern thinkers, offering practical tools for navigating life’s challenges. 
  At the core of Stoicism is the belief in distinguishing between what we can control and what we cannot. According to Stoic principles, we cannot control external events, but we can control our responses to them. This idea, known as the Dichotomy of Control, encourages individuals to focus on their actions, thoughts, and emotions rather than worrying about things beyond their influence. This shift in perspective can lead to greater peace of mind and less suffering, as it frees us from the emotional turmoil of trying to change the uncontrollable. 
  Stoicism is often associated with a few key figures, including Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius. Each of these philosophers contributed their own insights into the practice of Stoicism, emphasizing different aspects of the philosophy. Epictetus, for example, taught that true freedom comes from mastering our internal world, while Seneca focused on the importance of reflection and mindfulness in everyday life.   Ideas build and destroy civilizations. Things are not going well. The need for action is now. After thousands of years of human development, our humanity seems to be intent upon disassembling itself with WOKE, Politically Correct thought police, rejected lessons from history and art, ‘book burning’, minorities DICTATING how we live and what we MUST think, riots, homelessness or helplessness and political polarizations with open conflicts and theft in our streets. How to revitalize harmonious existence, individual respect, laws equally for us all, and spirituality either via religion or constructive logic. So to create the conditions for cooperative, harmonious, self-disciplined inter-personal life: a return to greater stability of both mind and action working together for the good of communities and an increasingly interdependent World Social Family. 
  This building and rebuilding process will take generations, the current alternative will be humanity’s exit which would be both painful and permanent. This need not be. We each can learn so confidently form a renewal of our children’s real future but only by rebuilding our thought processes, awareness, and understanding with and through calm debate, discussion, and sharing of mind.  
  Industry, agriculture, and the use of both people’s time and natural abilities matter greatly: smaller could well be far more beneficial. Creating public demand to raise output and income too often leads to waste and even harm while generating wealth for a minority, too many of whom are amoral or undeserving.  
  What is reality other than what we decide it to be? All stems from family upbringing, mental inputs and experiences; educational practices, understood beliefs, the free flow of ideas; respecting other's thoughts, and community actions, which all coalesce into formed concepts and so beliefs. These and more build our minds, humour, fears and needs. These are the very Bricks that Build Us

  The Fortunate Child

  It was a long, sometimes devastating, journey Maxine was forced to undertake through the depths of despair as a preschooler, and then on through a tumultuous adolescence during which she was ignored yet at the same time abused by a uncaring mother who daily left her with a malevolent grandmother who similarly mistreated her. 
  		Instructed by her divorced mother to no longer call her Mama, in an effort to enhance her own marketability as a perspective wife to some unsuspecting man. 
  		Fortunately, Maxine was endowed with the guiles and street smarts that allowed her to survive. The pain of her youth was converted, of necessity, into the toughness and unwillingness to accept what appeared to be inevitable. As the result of her own perseverance and courage she was accepted and graduated from Brooklyn College. 
  		Separating herself from her horrendous past, she resurrected her life by achieving success as a school teacher, a wife and, ultimately, a mother and grandmother. Along the way, she became proficient as a stock trader, thus providing herself and her family the additional financial and emotional security she was deprived of in her early years. 
  		Maxine reflects on her life as an independent success story.
