Sinopse

Rural Urban Divide explores the historical tensions between urban and rural areas during periods of significant political and social change. Focusing on France, Britain, and America, the book examines how differing economic interests, social structures, and cultural values led to varied responses to revolutions. It highlights that revolutions, while aiming for unity, often fracture along urban-rural lines due to the resistance in rural areas rooted in concerns about economic survival and the preservation of local autonomy. The book argues that understanding this divide is crucial, as ignoring it can undermine the very revolutions intended to create equitable societies.

The book systematically progresses across chapters, first introducing a theoretical framework to define 'urban' and 'rural' within each nation. It then analyzes the French Revolution, focusing on the antagonism between Paris and the countryside, where issues like land ownership ignited rural rebellions. Next, it examines Britain's industrialization, urbanization, and rural displacement, exploring how the Enclosure Acts fueled resentment in the countryside. Finally, it contrasts the revolutionary fervor of American coastal cities with the conservatism of agrarian communities, revealing how issues like taxation exacerbated regional tensions. By comparatively analyzing these distinct national contexts, the book offers a unique perspective that is relevant to both historians and policymakers grappling with similar issues today.

Intellect is not a possession but a force—fluid, expansive, untamed. It cannot be hoarded, nor can it be caged within doctrine or tradition. In Intellect, Ralph Waldo Emerson urges us to see thought as a living current, not a stagnant pool. True understanding, he suggests, is not about collecting knowledge but about breaking through to deeper insight, where intuition leads and logic follows.
Emerson's vision of the mind defies confinement. He challenges the idea that intelligence is something fixed, something to be measured or owned. Instead, he sees it as a ceaseless motion, a self-renewing energy that thrives on boldness and independence. To think freely is to embrace the unknown, to risk uncertainty in pursuit of wisdom.
Part of Essays: First Series, Intellect is a call to let go of borrowed opinions and trust the mind's own unfolding. It is not a guidebook, not a doctrine—it is an invitation to intellectual courage. To read it is to reconsider not only what we think but how we think.

If we ask ourselves what spiritual science should be for men, then presumably, out of all sorts of reactions and feelings that we have developed in the course of our work in this field, we will place the following answer before our souls: Spiritual science should be for us a path to the higher development of our humanity, of all that is human in us.

George Yeo on Bonsai Banyan and...

Since his undergraduate days in Cambridge, George Yeo has spoken and written much in and out of government. Many remember the things which he said or wrote years ago. This book is a compilation of some of his best speeches and writings which were selected by Asad Latif and Lee Huay Leng in consultation with him.

The book has a rather unusual title because there are many aspects to George Yeo which makes him difficult to classify. As a student leader, he was radical but conciliatory. In the Singapore Armed Forces, he was atypical, moving from the Army to the Air Force before becoming Director of Joint Operations and Planning. In politics, he is fondly remembered by artists, journalists, doctors, businessmen and foreign diplomats, and by his colleagues and constituents. His own staff said he had a curious mind. They complained that he rarely used the drafts which they had prepared for him.

George Yeo describes himself as a Taoist even though he is a Roman Catholic and is now on the Papal staff. Buddhists are surprised he championed the revival of Nalanda University as an international project. He remains close to Singaporeans of different races and religions even though he has a deep sense of his own ancestral roots and religion. In politics, he has been described both as a liberal and a conservative. In his Parliamentary maiden speech, he spoke of the importance of democracy but has repeated many times that democracy is only a means and not an end in itself. He has a deep interest in history which partly explains his seeing the re-emergence of China and India earlier than most others.

The bonsai and the banyan are metaphors he uses for Singapore. Singapore is a city-state and must never have an inflated view of itself. The bonsai describes Singapore modestly, but he adds that the bonsai can be intensely interesting and valuable. The banyan provides shade and we are grateful for it, but too much makes us weak. As for the Tao, that perhaps is what gives unity to his many interests. © 2015 by George Yeo. Published in paper format in Singapore by World Scientific Publishing, recorded by Storyside 2021.

    Revolution and other Essays

A collection of 13 essays written between 1900 and 1908, published in 1910. The lead essay, "Revolution", outlines how and why London renounced capitalism as a failed social system and declared himself an active participant in the "socialist revolution", the last essay is an autobiographical piece, and the essays in between are on diverse subjects. A few of the “essays” are actually humorous short fiction stories; others are serious, sometimes angry rants against capitalistic greed and political corruption. All of the pieces are thought-provoking and excellently written, though only loosely intellectual, highly opinionated, and rife with contradiction, as was London himself. -- Summary by Michele Fry

In April 1945, Linz was one of Nazi Germany's most vital assets. It was a crucial transportation hub and communications center, with railyards brimming with war materiel destined for the front lines. Linz was also the town Hitler claimed as home and had long intended to remake as the cultural capital of Europe, filling its planned Fuehrermuseum with world-famous art stolen from his conquered territories.

Inevitably, Linz was also one of the most heavily defended targets remaining in Europe. The airmen of the Fifteenth Air Force were a mix of seasoned veterans and newcomers. As their mission was unveiled in the predawn hours of April 25th, audible groans and muffled expletives passed many lips. The reality of that mission would prove more brutal than any imagined.

Drawing on interviews with dozens of America's last surviving World War II veterans, as well as previously unpublished sources, Mike Croissant compellingly relates one of the war's last truly untold stories—a gripping chronicle of warfare, the death of Nazi Germany, and the beginning of the Cold War. It is also a timeless tale of courage and terror, loss and redemption, humanity and savagery.
