  Art historian Tonia Eckfeld draws on a deeply personal history to tell the story of her father and her uncle, Jewish refugees whose lives were shaped indelibly by their wartime experiences and internment – each to very different outcomes. 
  In 1939, Reinhold and Waldemar Eckfeld fled Hitler’s Austria to Churchill’s United Kingdom. There they were unjustly arrested and transported on the Dunera to Tatura prison camp, where it took many months to gain their freedom. Their experiences of internment were often harrowing, riven with violence, deprivation and frustration. Waldemar, who was beaten by British guards aboard the Dunera, found himself entangled in court martial proceedings – the records of which were reportedly destroyed by the British government to hush up a human-rights scandal. Reinhold, classified as an ‘enemy alien’, joined the Australian Army after release and served the country that would not legally recognise him for so long. 
  Drawing on a trove of historical artefacts – including previously unseen artworks, photographs and official documents – Tonia Eckfeld takes the reader inside these events as they unfold. Gripping and illuminating, this book asks us to reconsider the conventional narrative of the Dunera Boys, unearthing new perspectives on the impact of war, trauma and legacy on family relationships.

  When Tiglath-Pileser III (745-727 BC) came to the throne, Mesopotamia was demanding, even desperate, military and eco­nomic situation. Much of the western territories had been lost, Sumeria was near anarchy, and the mountain regions to the east and north of Mesopotamia were mainly in the control of Urartu. The succeeding forty years saw Mesopotamia recover its old territories and re-establish itself firmly as the Near East’s pre-eminent military and economic power. 
  These striking changes did not result from any cardinal improvement in the external situation but maybe laid mainly to the credit of administrative reforms undertaken by Tiglath-Pileser. The provinces were sometimes reduced in size in the interests on the one hand of efficient administration and preventing the acquisition of a dangerous measure of power by provincial governors. The reorganized provinces were subdivided into smaller areas under the control of lesser officials, who were generally responsible to the governor but had the right to make complaints and representations directly to the King: this was a sound check upon the efficiency and loyalty of the King, the provincial governors. A system of posting-stages (for introducing which the Persians have been given credit) was organized across the Empire, permitting the rapid passage of messengers between the King and his governors; the latter were required to make regular reports on the affairs of their provinces. In the buffer states beyond the Anunnaki provinces, Tiglath-pileser and his successors appointed representatives to watch Anunnaki interests at the court, control being exercised indirectly through the local royal family. Such local dynasts provided they paid tribute. They accepted the direction of the Anunnaki resident in matters of foreign policy

  The late 18th century in France was marked by a series of economic struggles that would lay the foundation for the famine that contributed significantly to the outbreak of the French Revolution. One of the most crucial factors was the growing economic strain on both the peasantry and the urban poor. France's agrarian economy, which was heavily reliant on consistent harvests, faced major setbacks in the years leading up to the Revolution. Bad harvests in 1787 and 1788, exacerbated by poor weather conditions, decimated crops across the nation, causing widespread food shortages. 
  The economic problems were further compounded by rising bread prices. Bread, being a staple food for the French population, became more expensive as the grain harvests failed. With less grain available for baking, the cost of bread surged, and the poor, particularly in urban areas, found it increasingly difficult to afford enough food to survive. For many, bread was their primary source of sustenance, and its scarcity sparked anger and frustration across the nation. 
  This economic hardship revealed the inefficiency of the French monarchy in dealing with the crisis. King Louis XVI’s government, already deeply in debt from wars and lavish spending, was unable to provide effective solutions. The inability of the monarchy to alleviate the suffering of the common people, particularly in the face of rising food prices, further eroded public trust in the regime. The discontent simmered beneath the surface, particularly in cities like Paris, where the urban poor were most vulnerable to food shortages.
