Brockmole traces the rise of gendered marketing of automobiles over the course of the twentieth century. Auto companies created ads that conformed to commonly held ideas about women's relationships with automobiles. As the century progressed, marketing to women became less informative and even more gendered: the automotive industry portrayed women as passengers, props, or reluctant drivers, interested primarily in aesthetics. And yet, by the 1970s, female drivers were communicating directly with each other, forming clubs, and teaching each other through women-focused repair manuals.  
    
  By examining market research studies, advertising archives, trade journals, women's magazines, newspapers, driving handbooks, and repair manuals, this book shows how women bought their way into the automobile and masculine car culture. Brockmole uncovers the stories of pioneering women who defied conventions, such as trailblazer Alice Ramsey, the first woman to drive across the United States in 1909, and Barb Wyatt, whose contributions to automotive manuals broke new ground. Women have always been users of technology, and this book illustrates how the auto industry evolved—as well as how it chose not to evolve—in response.

  To the ancient Egyptians, death was not the end—it was merely a transition to a new phase of existence. The afterlife was not a vague, distant concept but a vivid and essential part of their spiritual understanding. They believed in a continuation of life, one where the soul would live on in a realm filled with beauty, light, and eternal peace, provided certain conditions were met. This vision shaped much of their culture, from their art and architecture to their religious practices and personal values. 
  Central to this belief was the idea of the soul, which they saw as comprising multiple parts. The Ka was the life force, the vital essence that departed the body at death but still needed sustenance. The Ba represented personality and mobility—it was the part of the soul that could travel between the living world and the afterlife. The Akh, achieved through a successful transition and judgment, was the transformed spirit that lived among the gods. Each of these aspects had its own role to play in the journey beyond death, and maintaining their harmony was crucial. 
  Immortality was not automatic. It had to be earned through righteous living and proper burial. For the Egyptians, morality and order, guided by the principle of Ma’at—truth, balance, and justice—were essential. One had to live in accordance with Ma’at to hope for a favorable judgment in the afterlife. This belief extended into the funerary rituals, where the dead would be judged in the Hall of Two Truths, their heart weighed against the Feather of Ma’at to determine their fate.

  Dead Sea and the Dead Sea...

  If the world had a navel, it would be the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth where one can still stand on dry land. The photographs of this unique lake seem to be taken from a science fiction movie, or a land devastated after a nuclear holocaust. To others, the fluffy shores could remind them of Antarctica although it is in one of the warmest spots on the planet. Its white, creamy masses, scattered along golden beaches, are not ice floes or frozen water, but effervescent salt formations. The famous Jordan River, where the Hebrew people entered the Promised Land and Jesus was baptized, flows into the lake, but the basin is so deeply sunk into the face of the planet that the waters never leave, as if they had fallen into a small black hole where nothing can escape.  
  	The Dead Sea is also an archaeological site loaded with history. Known among the first civilizations in the region as "Sea of Asphalt" and “Salt Sea,” innumerable myths and legends lend it an air of mystery, as if it attracted sterility and misfortune while eradicating all life from its waters. It was perhaps the inhospitable feel of the place, the almost total desolation surrounding it, which led the writer of the Pentateuch to imagine that many years ago, a cataclysm sent to annihilate perverted people had taken place there.  
  	In the mid-20th century, one of the most important religious discoveries of all time was made in a series of caves near the Dead Sea, which had hidden remnants of nearly 1,000 texts, some of which were included in the Hebrew Bible and others which were extra-biblical. In addition to being the oldest surviving copies of such documents, the mixture of languages and different kinds of papers helped shed light on the people in the region at the time, making the Dead Sea Scrolls vitally important to the world’s major religions.
