Sinopse

Have you ever boarded your morning commute and wished you'd never arrive at your destination? That is what happens to the protagonist of The Way to Work. Having boarded what he assumes to be his usual 8:08 service, he soon discovers that all is not as it first seemed.
Does this train stop at any station? Do the carriages ever come to an end? And where is the colleague he thought he saw, as he took his place in the quiet coach? Our narrator reflects on his job as salesman for a cat litter manufacturer as he wanders down-train in search of answers – yet the sliding doors that close behind him appear to be malfunctioning, and every person he meets seems to remember very little of their past.
Seduction, destiny and salvation all come into play as this relentless novel unfolds, and we discover precisely where the 8:08 is heading and just who is in charge.

Archaeological illustrator, Beatrix Forster, accompanies her husband, retired archaeology professor, William Forster, to excavate the cemetery at San Miguel in Excelsis, an isolated medieval sanctuary in the mountains of northern Spain. Bill's former student, now a priest in Navarre, has enticed them out of comfortable retirement with the rumor that the infamous medieval knight and founder of the sanctuary, Teodosio de Goñi, may be buried at the church. Despite initial misgivings about working in Spain under the shadow of Franco's dictatorship, they accept the project and travel to Navarre with students from the University of Toronto. Personalities clash as the students grow weary of the remote location, but when one of the students is brutally murdered, accusations begin to surface. Beatrix and Bill fear that the local Civil Guard, much hated by the populace, has bungled the investigation and they take it upon themselves to determine the identity of the killer. They soon find that everyone at San Miguel has something to hide, and Beatrix begins to wonder just how well she and Bill know those with whom they are living.

The invitation was unspoken, yet something called her back. A place once known, now strange, its stillness too complete, its warmth rehearsed. Beneath the routines and relics of the town, something festers. She comes seeking pieces of a v anished past; what she finds is a place built on omissions, where every truth has been carefully buried, and every memory rewritten.
One joins her, reluctantly, at first, drawn by a pull he cannot name. Together they disturb what was meant to remain untouched. Doors sealed long ago creak open. Forgotten histories stir. Their search turns into trespass, their questions into crimes. The deeper they go, the more they become part of what they’re trying to escape.
Not all legacies die. Some wait. And some require blood to stay quiet.

A moving portrait of a young woman's struggle to break free of her upper-class upbringing amid the whirlwind years of the sexual revolution.

It's the mid-1950s and Margot Thornsen is growing up between a Park Avenue apartment in New York and her family's sumptuous Oyster Bay estate as the presumed heir to her late grandfather's steel fortune. Her domineering mother has charted a course for her—to forego education and marry well—but Margot is more interested in microscopes and beetles and books. When a devastating fire brings the family legacy crashing down and the sexual revolution dawns, a new path opens up—the expansive world of late-1960s Radcliffe College and the intellectual, cultural, and sexual freedom Margot has been reaching for.

Hailed for her "intelligent and heartfelt fiction" (Kirkus Reviews), Wendell Steavenson writes with grace, precision, and great psychological perception. With Margot, she has crafted a vivid portrayal of the quiet torment of young women of its era, a comically caustic mother-daughter story, and a memorable evocation of one woman's passion for the wonder of science.
