Sinopsis

The Book of Shadrach is more difficult to date, as it could be interpreted as written between 880 and 870 BCE, or between 609 and 605 BCE. The Book of Shadrach predicts the fall of the Egyptian Empire and the end of Assyrian influence, meaning they must have still been around at the time. The book also lists Sidon and Tyre as having defences, meaning it was before the cities were conquered by Cambyses. The book included a prophecy that Damascus would be sacrificed, suggesting it may have been earlier than 853 BCE, when Damascus was independent and led a coalition of Levantine states against Neo-Assyrian expansion. However, the same set of variables was present briefly between 609 and 605 BCE. The remnants of the Assyrian military were being systematically hunted by the Babylonians, after the fall of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and Canaan briefly fell under the dominion of Egypt. Judah had been a tributary of the Neo-Assyrian Empire until the “western usurper” led a failed coup d’état in 622 BCE. After the rebellion spread to the Levant, King Josiah switched sides and later attacked the Egyptian army as it traveled north to assist the Assyrians. King Josiah died in this attack on the Egyptians in 609 BCE, and King Necho II made Judah a tributary of Egypt. The Book of Shadrach is generally included in the Book of Zakharian, due to a transcription error in the Hebrew translation, which rendered Šadrak as Ḥadrāk. The error most likely took place in an earlier Demotic Egyptian version of the book, as both the sounds "s" and "ḥ" were represented by the same letter in the Demotic script. It doesn’t seem likely that the name Šdrk could have been misread as Ḥdrk in the Phoenician or Aramaic script, as the "š," "ś," "ṣ," and "ḥ" sounds were represented by very different letters. The name is rendered as Sedrak in the Codex Washingtonianus from the 3rd century CE, and Sedrach in the Codex Alexandrinus from the 5th century. Sedrach is also the most common Greek transliteration of Šadrak from the Book(s) of Daniel. The Coptic manuscripts also use Sedrakh as both the name in the introduction to this prophecy and the friend of Daniel. The Shadrach in Daniel was first mentioned as interpreting a dream for King Nebuchadnezzar in 604 BCE, after being taken captive in Jerusalem. Therefore, this may have been the same Shadrach. However, Šadrak was also listed as being the Babylonian version of the Canaanite name Ḥănanyâ, which was a common name at the time in Judah. The Book of Daniel also refers to Shadrach as being a young man at the time, suggesting he was probably not the same Shadrach who made an important prophecy in 609 BCE. In any event, this Shadrach was executed in 587 BCE, when Judah rebelled from being a Babylonian tributary.

Recovering the Wisdom of Early Christian Figures to Effectively Shepherd Modern Churches In addition to the regular demands of preaching and shepherding, modern pastors feel undue pressure to entertain congregants and increase attendance numbers. Often, churches resort to the latest business models to keep pace. But true, life-giving guidance lies in Scripture and the wisdom of those having come before us. Ancient Wisdom for the Care of Souls helps pastors to embrace a classic, biblical vision of ministry through the study of selected pastoral virtues and early church figures. Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory the Great both referred to ministry as “the care of souls.” Calling for a “return to the sources,” professors Coleman M. Ford and Shawn J. Wilhite ponder what a scriptural vision of ministry is, how patristic voices help inform this vision, and how pastors today can cultivate this pastoral vision in their churches. Each chapter examines an important pastoral topic―such as humility, the sacraments, and contemplative theology―and brings it to life through a constructive model and profiles of early church fathers. Encouraged by the patristic wisdom of Irenaeus, Athanasius, John Chrysostom, and more, readers learn a simple and slower model for pastoring that they can emulate as they care for their communities. A slower pace of life may, in fact, help pastors cultivate the soil of souls more richly and, as a result, return to ministry as “the care of souls.” Applicable: Enriches the spiritual and ministerial practices of modern pastors through ancient church wisdom, pastoral reflections, and examples from Scripture Theological and Historical: Features detailed profiles of church fathers, including Ambrose of Milan, Augustine, Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, and others Written for Students and Pastors: Ideal for college-level courses, as well as new or seasoned ministers

HOLY BIBLE - 1 CORINTHIANS: NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT) The Holy Bible, New Living Translation, is an authoritative Bible translation, rendered faithfully into today’s English from the ancient texts by 90 leading Bible scholars. The NLT’s living language breathes life into even the most difficult-to-understand Bible passages—but even more powerful are stories of how people’s lives are changing as the words speak directly to their hearts. The New Living Translation is perfect for every age and stage of life, allowing every member of the family to read the same text.   What method did the translators use in making the NLT? The translators of the New Living Translation set out to render the message of the original texts of Scripture into clear, contemporary English. As they did so, they translated as simply and literally as possible when that approach yielded an accurate, clear, and natural English text. Many words and phrases were rendered literally and consistently into English, preserving essential literary and rhetorical devices, ancient metaphors, and word choices that give structure to the text and provide echoes of meaning from one passage to the next. On the other hand, the translators rendered the message more dynamically when the literal rendering was hard to understand, was misleading, or yielded archaic or foreign wording. They clarified difficult metaphors and terms to aid in the reader’s understanding. The translators first struggled with the meaning of the words and phrases in the ancient context; then they rendered the message into clear, natural English. Their goal was to be both faithful to the ancient texts and eminently readable. The result is a translation that is both exegetically accurate and idiomatically powerful. More than 90 Bible scholars, along with a group of accomplished English stylists, worked closely together toward that goal. In the end, the NLT is the result of precise scholarship conveyed in living, contemporary language.
