Sinopsis

In this book, Shaw draws upon his knowledge of Asian culture and years of study in the martial arts to show us how we, too, can achieve higher understanding through the tenets of Zen Buddhism. Iado - the meditative way of the sword becomes a path to enlightenment. The first step is to learn to control the physical body; once physical senses are honed, the thinking mind can be silenced and can join with the body to become a unified force. Illustrated. Index.

Amidst an uncertain world in constant flux, it’s easy to see the value of the chess player’s special skills: thinking ahead, taking preparatory moves, maintaining deep concentration, thinking outside themselves, and staying goal-oriented.
These skills are not easily acquired; they require consistent effort, practice, mental discipline, and patience. However, these skills are essential for success in professional and personal life. Rushing into decisions or actions without careful consideration can lead to mistakes, missed opportunities, and downright messy situations.
In addition to enhancing discipline and patience, playing chess can be a valuable exercise in mindfulness. By immersing oneself in the game and giving it their full attention, one can learn to be more present and engaged in every moment of life.
Many resources are available online to learn and practice chess, such as chess.com and Lichess. With a plethora of videos, tutorials, and other resources, one can understand the tactics and strategies of chess at their own pace and convenience. But remember: the key is to play to learn and cultivate the skills rather than memorize patterns or become good at chess for the sake of being good at chess.
So, next time you have a spare moment, consider focusing on these skills during a chess game. And in all your endeavors, remember the importance of discipline, patience, and mindfulness. Doing so may only sometimes lead to victory in chess but will always, undoubtedly, lead to growth and personal development in life.

Published in Rock and Ice Magazine in 1986, this essay, co-written by John Long and Dwight Brooks, tells the story of a hair-raising caving adventure in Papua New Guinea. This selection is part of the full length audiobook, "Explore: Stories of Survival From Off The Map."

Dwight Brooks (born 1954) is an independent novelist and teacher. John Long (born July 21, 1953) is an American rock climber and author. A skilled free climber, Long popularized "free soloing" (climbing with no rope) during his high school days out at Joshua Tree National Park, first introducing John Bachar to the practice in 1974 with their now fêted ascent of Double Cross, at Joshua Tree. Long's many climbing feats include the first one-day ascent of the most sought after rock climb in North America, the 3,000 foot Nose route on El Capitan, on Memorial Day, 1975, with Jim Bridwell and Billy Westbay. The following year, partnered with Dale Bard, Long made the second one-day ascent of El Cap via the West Face, in the remarkable time of five hours. He followed this with blitz ascents of Leaning Tower, Washington Column, Half Dome and Ribbon Falls, precipitating the modern speed climbing movement so popular today, both in Yosemite Valley and beyond.

Gary Telles has been narrating audiobooks for the past ten years. A veteran stage actor, he has performed classical, contemporary and original theatre across the country, in addition to appearing on television, radio and CD-ROM.
