Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Elinor Glyn, ‘The Reflections of Ambrosine: A Novel.’

"Everything!" he said, in a fury, thumping the table so hard that a little Dresden-china figure fell down and broke into pieces on the parquet floor. "Everything! Your great eyes are always sad. You never take the least interest in anything about any of us. You are docile--yes; and obedient--yes; and when I hold you in my arms I might be holding a stuffed doll for all the response you make. And when I kiss you, you shudder!

Elinor Glyn began her writing in 1900, starting with a book based on letters to her mother, 'The Visits of Elizabeth'. And thereafter she more or less wrote one book each year to keep the wolf from the door, as her husband was debt-ridden from 1908, and also to keep up her standard of living. After several years of illness her husband died in 1915.

Early in her writing career she was recognised as one of the pioneers of what could be called erotic fiction, although not by modern-day standards, and she coined the use of the world 'It' to mean at the time sex-appeal and she helped to make Clara Bow a star by the use of the sobriquet for her of 'The It Girl'.

On the strength of her reputation and success she moved to Hollywood in 1920 and in 1921 was featured as one of the famous personalities in a Ralph Barton cartoon drawn especially for 'Vanity Fair' magazine.

A number of her books were made into films, most notably 'Beyond the Rocks' (1906), which starred Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson, and she was a scriptwriter for the silent movie industry, working for both MGM and Paramount Pictures in the mid-1920s. In addition she also had a brief career as one of the earliest female directors.

The Victorians may have attempted to show the world they were upright, strict and full of virtue but much of this thinking has been subverted by their erotic and pornographic writing. With a vast Empire to organise and rule Victorians authors also had a wealth of new locations in which to have their characters fornicate in their written erotic adventures. These purveyors of erotic literature were no slouches when it came to getting their materials into the hands and minds of others. They used one of the great tools of the day; the literary magazine. Engagingly in the great tradition of literary magazines who serialised many wonderful books the Victorians had their own pornographic magazine which ran for eighteen monthly issues from July 1879 to December 1880. That seems to be quite some enterprise when you consider just the business side of printing and distribution of it whilst one presumes the law was casting its beady eyes at you. On the literary side it managed to print six serialised novels with Lady Pokingham or They All Do It being one of them as well as many short stories and a whole host of other minutiae including ballads, poems, limericks, jokes, witticisms, puns, ditties all in textures from refined to coarse. This book details the sexual adventures of Lady Beatrice Pokingham, a bright, beautiful and beguiling young woman who we first encounter in a letter she is writing late in life to Walter. She recounts her life story beginning from her earliest memory of being spanked on the bottom by a birch whilst at boarding school aged 7 and noting the almost uncontrollable excitement of the teacher. Her loss of innocence was rapid and debauchery was rife before and after her marriage to a metrosexual husband lusting for new sexual highs. This is a must read for those who enjoy graphic sexual content of the Victorian kind.
