Sinopse

In "Woman in the Nineteenth Century," Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli presents a groundbreaking exploration of the roles and rights of women during her era. Written in a compelling and eloquent prose style, the book weaves together personal reflections, philosophical insights, and social critique, making it a cornerstone of early feminist literature. Fuller utilizes a blend of transcendentalist ideals and empirical observations to argue for the necessity of women's independence and self-fulfillment. Contextually situated in the burgeoning women's rights movement of the 1840s, her work serves as both a manifesto and a call to action, challenging the prevailing social norms of her time. Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli, a prominent figure in the Transcendentalist movement and an advocate for women's education and rights, drew from her extensive experiences as a poet, editor, and social reformer. Her interactions with contemporaries such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau enriched her perspective, and her travels in Europe further informed her understanding of gender dynamics across cultures. Fuller'Äôs own struggles with societal expectations uniquely positioned her to articulate the urgent need for change in women's lives. "Woman in the Nineteenth Century" is essential reading for anyone interested in feminism, literature, or social justice. Fuller's eloquence and depth of thought make her arguments not only historically significant but also timelessly relevant. This book invites the reader to reflect on lingering gender inequalities and inspires ongoing dialogue about women's rights.

A unique journey into the Arctic world, its myths and changes
Finland’s leading expert on Arctic affairs, Markku Heikkilä shares insights from 25 years of travel, from the northern parts of Canada to the Ob River and from Iceland to Alaska.
During his journeys, Heikkilä shatters myths and preconceptions about life in the Arctic. He highlights stories that few people know, such as the Last War of the Khanty People, Alaskan Sámi reindeer and the ballerina in Svalbard.
The book dives into landscapes and lives, some of which we are about to lose. It’s about more than our changing climate; the Arctic was once a shared space among different peoples, until the region was swept in a storm of global politics.
”A breathtaking book. It delves deep into the northern world in a smooth and profound way.” – Kulttuuritoimitus online magazine
”Markku Heikkilä has compiled his extensive knowledge and a quarter of a century of travel in eight Arctic countries.” – Kaleva newspaper

Jesse Ball has produced fourteen acclaimed works of deeply empathetic absurdism in poetry and fiction. Now, he offers listeners his first memoir, one that showcases his "humane curiosity" (James Wood) and invites the listener into a raw and personal account of love, grief, and memory. Inspired by the memoir Édouard Levé put to paper shortly before his death, Autoportrait is an extraordinarily frank and intimate work from one of America's most brilliant young authors.

The subtle power of Ball's voice conjures the richness of everyday life. In each chapter, half-remembered moments are woven together with the joys and triumphs—and the mistakes and humiliations, too—that somehow tell us who we are, why we are here. Held at the same height as tragic accounts of illness or death are moments of startling beauty, banality, or humor: "I wake in the morning, I sit, I walk long distances. If there is somewhere to swim, I may swim. If I have a bicycle, I will ride it, especially to meet someone. There is no more preparing for me to do, other than preparing for death, and I do that by laughing. Not laughing at death, of course. Laughing at myself."

An extraordinary memoir that reminds us what is possible, Autoportrait will leave you feeling utterly invigorated, inspired, and a little afraid.

    Nationalized Politics -...

In the United States, politics has become increasingly nationalized in recent years as voter decision-making is now driven by partisan or national political forces rather than the attributes of individual candidates. Indeed, voters now seem more concerned with which of the two national parties will be in power across all levels of government as opposed to which candidate will represent them individually.

Nationalized Politics asks and answers the question, "how has nationalization influenced elections across different political eras?" Jamie L. Carson, Joel Sievert, and Ryan D. Williamson look at historical variation in nationalization through an analysis of congressional elections from 1840 to 2020. By examining roughly 180 years of elections, the authors leverage considerable differences in electoral competition, electoral rules, nationalization, polarization, and partisan advantage via the incumbency advantage. Moreover, Carson, Sievert, and Williamson employ a unique survey design to capture citizen attitudes toward the nationalization of politics to further consider the question of how nationalization is currently shaping politics. Providing a comprehensive history of US congressional elections, Nationalized Politics illustrates the roots of the current electoral landscape in the US.

Dr. v. Oefele states of pharmacy before the time of Hippocrates, that although the practice of medicine was not separated from pharmacy among the Greeks and Romans, there was such a separation among the ancient Egyptians, from whom the distinction was handed down to the Copts, and by them to the Arabians; and, in fact, that the term pharmacist is probably of Egyptian origin, being derived from Ph-ar-maki, which signifies the preparation of medicine from drugs. The Egyptian pharmaki who were engaged in that occupation belonged to the higher social ranks of writers or academically-educated persons, comprising also the priests, physicians, statesmen, and military commanders. The Jews were indebted to Egypt for their primary ideas of medicine, but they cast away the ideas of demonology and magic which clouded what was good in the practice of Egypt. The Talmud recommends onions for worms, and wine, pepper, and asafœtida for flatulency. The Talmudists are responsible for calling the earth, air, fire, and water elementary bodies. In the middle ages the Jews rendered service to the healing art, and had a large share in the scientific work connected with the Arab domination of Spain. In China the use of drugs goes back to a very remote age, and alchemy was practised by the Chinese long previous to its being known in Europe. For two centuries prior to the Christian era, and for four or more subsequent, the transmutation of the base metals into gold, and the composition of the elixir of immortality, were questions ardently studied by the Chinese.
