The Zapotec civilization emerged in the valleys of Oaxaca, a region characterized by its fertile land, diverse ecosystems, and strategic position for trade and agriculture. Archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest Zapotec communities began forming around 1500 BCE, with small farming villages dotting the landscape. Over time, these settlements grew in complexity, giving rise to a society that would become one of Mesoamerica’s most influential civilizations.
Early Zapotec communities relied heavily on agriculture, cultivating maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers—staples that formed the foundation of their diet. The region’s rivers and seasonal rains provided a reliable water source, allowing for irrigation techniques that supported larger populations. As food production increased, villages expanded, and the need for organization led to the development of social hierarchies. Religious leaders, warriors, and skilled artisans began to hold distinct roles in society, paving the way for the emergence of political structures.
By the first millennium BCE, the Zapotecs had established themselves as a dominant force in the Oaxaca Valley. Unlike nomadic or loosely structured societies, they developed permanent settlements with planned architecture, ceremonial centers, and marketplaces. This period saw the rise of San José Mogote, one of the earliest known Zapotec centers, where the first signs of their writing system and political organization appeared. San José Mogote’s influence laid the groundwork for the later establishment of Monte Albán, which would become the heart of Zapotec power.

Elias initially suspects infidelity, but his investigation leads him to a terrifying discovery: his perfect life, his esteemed career, and even his own memories were meticulously engineered by a clandestine organization known as The Cadre. Elias is Subject 404, a puppet designed to forget the trauma of his past and serve as an anchor for a massive, global psychological operation run by his own mentor, Dr. Alistair Finch.
Driven by a desperate need to reclaim his identity, Elias must follow the trail Vivian left behind—a complex, brilliant map hidden within architectural blueprints and coded messages. He soon realizes Vivian did not run from him; she ran for him, sacrificing her own safety to expose the ultimate deception and lead him to the one person he was programmed to forget: his sister, Phoenix.
Now, Elias must race across continents to evade The Cadre, decipher Vivian’s final, devastating secrets, and confront his creator to save the family he never knew he had. The Last Thing She Said is a high-stakes psychological thriller that asks: If the foundation of your life is built on a lie, how far would you go to reclaim the truth?
Discover the Masterpiece of Deception That Will Make You Question the Reality of Your Own Memories.

First published as a print collection in 1992, when the writer lived in the UK, Rotten Pomerack now - with “voiceprint” - more clearly presents the writer’s voice and instinct for storytelling. Poem stories move from the Caribbean and other places to the UK, often examining the paradoxes and complexities of existence. For the print publication, Michael Horowitz commented that the collection was about “the proverbial slipping on a ‘rotten pomerack’ (French Creole for the cashew fruit) which can make events take an unexpected turn.

Black history is under attack from powerful right-wing forces that seek to excise it from classrooms and libraries. Its opponents fail to understand a simple truth: the best education challenges our assumptions and demands we keep at it. It makes us uncomfortable, helps us see larger forces at work, and gives us glimpses of alternate futures.

In Black History Is for Everyone, award-winning educator and scholar Brian Jones offers a meditation on the power of Black history, using his own experiences as a life-long learner and classroom teacher to question everything from the meaning of race and nation to the radicalism of the American Revolution. We see that "race" took centuries to get defined; we follow Frederick Douglass as he grapples with how to relate to the United States and, later, to Haiti; we compare the American, French, and Haitian revolutions; and we learn why the study of Black history has always been threatened.

In these pages, Jones offers a persuasive case for Black history and a celebration of the rewards of education. With warmth, immersive storytelling, and good cheer, Jones encourages us to delve deeper into our collective history, explores how curiosity about our world is essential—and reminds us that with stakes so high, the effort is worth it.
