Sinopsis

Vanished Gods explores the intriguing phenomenon of forgotten deities and the reasons behind their decline, offering insights into ancient religions and cultures. The book examines how political upheaval, religious competition, and the rise of new belief systems contributed to the fading of once-prominent gods. It also delves into the social structures and cultural practices associated with these lost gods, shedding light on the lives of their worshippers. For example, many ancient societies saw religious landscapes as dynamic, with gods gaining and losing importance over time. This study uniquely focuses on the process of divine decline, moving beyond mere identification of vanished gods to examining the specific factors leading to their disappearance. Drawing from archaeology, ancient texts, and comparative mythology, the book analyzes how these deities are preserved or transformed in myths, legends, and art. It is structured in three parts, beginning with case studies from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Near East, then moving to the gods of Greece and Rome, and finally examining their legacy in modern culture. Vanished Gods demonstrates that even forgotten deities can exert a subtle influence, prompting readers to consider the ephemeral nature of belief and the enduring power of stories. The book's approach shifts the focus from a passive understanding of religious evolution to an active investigation of the historical and cultural forces that shape divine fates.

Anubis is among the most recognizable gods of ancient Egypt. Is Anubis a relic of the past, or is he actively venerated now? Author Charlie Larson, a longtime priest and devotee of Anubis, answers these questions and more. Portrayed as either a black jackal or as a jackal-headed man, Anubis is Egypt's original Lord of the Dead. Anubis's domain extends beyond death, however; he is also a guardian of children and travelers and a finder of lost things. He is as modern as he is ancient—appearing in comic books, video games, and in Neil Gaiman's book American Gods and its television adaptation.

Anubis was among the most significant gods of ancient Egypt. In modern times, Anubis has emerged as a sacred patron of mediums and occultists. It's widely believed that his image is among the two canines found on the tarot Moon card.

Long overshadowed, at least in books, by Egyptian goddesses such as Isis and Sekhmet, Larson's book focuses the spotlight squarely on the jackal-headed god. His book features history and mythology but is also a practical guide to working with Anubis now. It features devotional practices and modern worship that includes rituals, prayers/invocations, correspondences, altars, and epithets. The book leads the listener on a journey of exploration into all things Anubis, exploring his various facets.

On July 12, 1588, the legendary Spanish Armada headed for the English Channel. The Spanish plan was to take this invasion, led by the Duke of Parma, to the coast of southeast England, where they would be unleashed to conquer Elizabethan England for Spain’s King Philip II and Catholic Christendom. The Armada included over 150 ships, 8,000 sailors, and 18,000 soldiers, and it boasted a firepower of 1,500 brass guns and 1,000 iron guns. Just leaving port itself took the entire Armada two days.
As everyone who has been taught history now knows, the Armada was one of the most famous military debacles in history. Regardless of the debate over whether it was simple mathematical miscalculation or plain bad luck, coupled with English fire ships assailing the Spanish ships, the Armada was decisively defeated. The Armada ultimately found its reluctant way home in awful conditions, having permanently lost over a third of the ships, and on the Irish coast, the Armada suffered further losses.
What has since been overlooked is that the undeclared Anglo-Spanish War continued, and it would do so until 1604. The English and their Dutch allies responded to the spectacular and unexpected defeat of the Armada with an attempt of their own to attack Spain with a fleet often called the "Counter Armada" in English. In 1589, once the impact of the previous year upon the Hapsburg naval power became clear, Elizabeth ordered Drake to gather the English fleet to take advantage of the situation. Unlike the Spanish, the English had no illusions of being able to invade their opponent's homelands and overthrow their state; instead, the English had far more modest goals. The English wanted to seek out the remainder of the Spanish fleet and burn it, land troops in Portugal and raise a revolution in that country, and capture the Azores Islands. If possible, they would use a base in the Azores to capture the anticipated treasure fleet from the New World.

When Valena Beety first became a federal prosecutor, her goal was to protect victims, especially women, from cycles of violence. What she discovered was that not only did prosecutions often fail to help victims, they frequently relied on false information, forensic fraud, and police and prosecutor misconduct.

Seeking change, Beety began working in the Innocence Movement, helping to free factually innocent people through DNA testing and criminal justice reform. Manifesting Justice focuses on the shocking story of Beety's client Leigh Stubbs—a young, queer woman in Mississippi, convicted of a horrific crime she did not commit because of her sexual orientation. Beety weaves Stubbs's harrowing narrative through the broader story of a broken criminal justice system.

Drawing on interviews with both innocence advocates and wrongfully convicted women, along with Beety's own experiences as an expert litigator and a queer woman, Manifesting Justice provides a unique outsider/insider perspective. Beety expands our notion of justice to include not just people who are factually innocent, but those who are over-charged, pressured into bad plea deals, and over-sentenced. The result is a riveting and timely book that will transform our very ideas of crime and punishment, what innocence is, and who should be free.

The influence of the comic book has never been greater, from movies to streaming and beyond, but the journey comics took from little-regarded kids' magazines to literary prize-winning books and global franchises turned on a highly unusual group of writers and artists. Few would have expected a small gathering of British comic book fans and creators in the early 'seventies to be a global cultural pivot-point, but this was the start of a disparate movement of punks, dropouts, and disaffected youths who reinvented a medium and became the imaginative heart of a global success story.

Based on years of interviews with a generation of leading writers, artists, and editors, Karl Stock reveals the true story of the wild times, passion, and determination that helped, hindered, and saw the reinvention of comics.

Stock brilliantly tells the story of the triumphs and disasters that rewrote the rulebook on what comics could be and who they should be for.
