The first full history of the Soviet Army’s High Commands during World War II and the Cold War—“Provides valuable and original research that reveals a great deal about the Soviet Union’s military command structure during World War II, with a few important insights into the almost fifty years that followed” (Journal of Military History). The war on the Eastern Front during 1941–45 was an immense struggle, running from the Barents Sea to the Caucasus Mountains. The vast distances involved forced the Soviet political-military leadership to resort to new organizational expedients in order to control operations along the extended front. These were the high commands of the directions, which were responsible for two or more fronts (army groups) and, along maritime axes, one or more fleets. In all, five high commands were created along the northwestern, western, southwestern, and North Caucasus strategic directions during 1941–42. However, the highly unfavorable strategic situation during the first year of the war, as well as interference in day-to-day operations by Stalin, severely limited the high commands' effectiveness. As a consequence, the high commands were abolished in mid-1942 and replaced by the more flexible system of supreme command representatives at the front. A High Command of Soviet Forces in the Far East was established in 1945 and oversaw the Red Army's highly effective campaign against Japanese forces in Manchuria. The Far Eastern High Command was briefly resurrected in 1947 as a response to the tense situation along the Korean peninsula and the ongoing civil war in China, but was abolished in 1953, soon after Stalin's death. Growing tensions with China brought about the recreation of the Far Eastern High Command in 1979, followed a few years later by the appearance of new high commands in Europe and South Asia. However, these new high commands did not long survive the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and were abolished a year later. The book relies almost exclusively on Soviet and post-communist archival and other sources and is the first unclassified treatment of this subject in any country, East or West.

The injustice and cruelty of the US carceral system find their barbaric apogee in the practice of solitary confinement. Once deemed a form of torture by the US Supreme Court, "the hole" is still wrongly used as a solution to prison overcrowding and violence. But locking someone in a cell the size of a parking space for months or years causes profound psychological harm. For Christopher Blackwell, it was a harrowing ordeal that changed his life forever. Ending Isolation weaves Chris's vivid account with other stories from solitary, alongside insights from legal and medical experts. Through these narratives and undeniable research, the book makes a powerful case for abolishing this cruel and unusual punishment.

A vital history of Gaza from Antiquity to the present—defying Israel's attempts to erase its heritage

Today Gaza lies in ruins after a genocide perpetrated before our eyes. Over 80% of its buildings have been destroyed, and its people have suffered the worst horrors imaginable. For over twenty years it has been an open-air prison. But once Gaza was an integral part of the Arab and Eastern Mediterranean world, where merchants traded their goods, and intellectual and religious life flourished, across all three Abrahamic faiths. Empires as diverse as the Persians, Romans, Mamluks, and Ottomans vied to control it—and its silks, fruits, and wines were renowned. Ilan Pappe tells the story of Gaza from Roman rule to the present, revealing the indomitable spirit of Gaza's people and the possibility for a more just future in a free Palestine.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Imagine a universe with no edges, no beginning, no end—a universe where every possible version of reality already exists. Infinity: Why Nothing Ends and Everything Is Possible takes you on a journey into the heart of this eternal, infinite cosmos.

Through the lens of physics, cosmology, philosophy, and human experience, this book explores:

How infinite space and infinite time guarantee that all possibilities exist somewhere.

Why consciousness is not an accident, but a fundamental aspect of reality, allowing the universe to know itself.

How time is an illusion, and how the “present moment” contains all pasts, all futures, and all possibilities.

How infinite versions of “you” exist across timelines, universes, and dimensions, all connected through awareness.

How life itself reflects infinity, from the fractal geometry of the cosmos to the way human connection creates infinite reflections in one another.

Richly illustrated with metaphors, thought experiments, and poetic insights, this book guides readers to a profound understanding: you are not separate from the infinite - you are an expression of it. When two people meet, when a gaze connects, infinity is mirrored back through consciousness, creating endless patterns of experience and connection.

Infinity is a book for those who are curious about the universe, fascinated by consciousness, or seeking a deeper understanding of reality. It blends science, philosophy and spirituality into a coherent vision of life and existence that is both awe-inspiring and deeply practical.

Open it, and you will never see yourself - or the universe - the same way again.
