With extensive research, this account of the Hollywood star and his legion of fans offers “the best narrative yet of Dean’s final ten hours” (San Francisco Examiner).   Just before sunset on September 20, 1955, James Byron Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder collided with Donald Gene Turnupseed’s Ford Tudor on California Highway 46. At age twenty-four, America’s newest screen idol was dead. But what really happened? Drawing on original documents, including the coroner’s inquest and other previously unpublished material, author Warren Newton Beath provides a painstakingly accurate reconstruction of Dean’s final hours and tragic death.   In addition, Beath explores Dean’s life and his enduring status as a cultural icon, including Elvis Presley’s worship of him; Hitchcock’s use of Highway 46 in the famous crop-dusting scene in North by Northwest; death threats against Giant director George Stevens if he dared excise a single frame of Deans’ final performance; and many more fascinating facts about the enigmatic screen legend.   Beath’s definitive account concludes with a memorable portrait of the James Dean cult, a strangely moving record of his posthumous life in the hearts of his adoring fans.

On his thirty-fifth birthday, Niven Neyland was riding high—a thriving business, beautiful fiancée, close-knit family, loving big brother. Until one wrong decision behind the wheel resulted in his brother’s death, loss of his business, shattered dreams, and a prison sentence for alcohol-related vehicular manslaughter. But finding himself inside prison walls turned out to be the greatest of blessings because in that dark place Niv encountered the light of God’s mercy and love, and true freedom within prison walls. It became the beginning of a ministry of God’s love and redemption to other inmates that continues to this day.
Finding Myself Inside is a compelling narrative of the Australian prison system, the challenges inmates face in prison and re-entering society.

It will speak to every reader in need of redemption, second chances, and a way through physical, emotional, or spiritual incarceration to true and everlasting freedom.

"Niven Neyland has written his compelling story, and I can honestly say there are few other stories that are quite as honest, insightful and hopeful as this one." Tim Costello. Former CEO of World Vision Australia.

Collected mid-twentieth–century correspondence between the author of The Pursuit of Love and her former employer, the celebrated London bookseller.

Nancy Mitford was a brilliant personality, a remarkable novelist and a legendary letter writer. It is not widely known that she was also a bookseller. From 1942 to 1946 she worked in Heywood Hill’s famous shop in Curzon Street, and effectively ran it when the male staff were called up for war service. After the war she left to live in France, but she maintained an abiding interest in the shop, its stock, and the many and varied customers who themselves form a cavalcade of the literary stars of post-war Britain. Her letters to Heywood Hill advise on recent French titles that might appeal to him and his customers, gossip engagingly about life in Paris, and enquire anxiously about the reception of her own books, while seeking advice about new titles to read. In return Heywood kept her up to date with customers and their foibles, and with aspects of literary and bookish life in London. Charming, witty, utterly irresistible, the correspondence gives brilliant insights into a world that has almost disappeared.

Praise for The Bookshop at 10 Curzon Street

“This volume of letters between [Nancy Mitford], then living in Paris, and G. Heywood Hill (1907–1986) is like a glass of champagne, from a good year, at a quiet garden party. It’s a beautiful day, one is among friends—but not too many—and laughter reigns.” —The New Criterion

At War With Waugh - The Real...

    W. F. Deedes

History, both political and literary, was made when W. F. Deedes met Evelyn Waugh in 1935. Both were in Abyssinia to cover a war which many in England regarded with bewildered indifference but which profoundly influenced an impending global conflict. Whilst Deedes was principally concerned with filing copy to London, the author of Brideshead Revisited had another agenda and another novel in mind, Scoop.
As Waugh drank, played poker and observed hacks in seedy hotel bars in Addis Ababa, he focussed on one young reporter. W. F. Deedes has always denied his association with Scoop's Boot, the innocent abroad and nature-notes writer who is accidentally dispatched to a war-zone. However, he acknowledges some similarities—particularly the tonnage of kit he shipped from London.
Bill Deedes considers that 'little' war and its importance with the hindsight of a further sixty-odd years of impeccably thoughtful reporting from other battlefields, whilst offering unique memories of his difficult contemporary—arguably the finest English novelist of his time. Written with characteristic wit, insight and affection, At War With Waugh is a small classic.
