Summary

Jeremy and his boyfriend, Sam, seem to have peaked in their relationship after only one year. Their passionate nights have now been replaced with long, lonely days as Sam struggles at work. With his constant busy schedule, he and Jeremy haven't been able to express their love in bed in months.

When Sam forgets their anniversary, it's very much the last straw for Jeremy. Sam tries to apologize before he leaves for work but Jeremy waves him off. As he idly sits at home, he decides to call the pool guy to come and clean their pool. When the pool guy arrives, Jeremy's heart skips a beat as he sees a beast of a man.

He's unsure of whether or not the big black pool guy is interested in men but after little poking and prodding, he confirms that the ebony statuesque man has his eyes on him. Having never been with a black man, Jeremy decides to try flirting... but how far does he go?

Doris Grumbach’s chilling look at the ways childhood experiences create transformative echoes that last throughout adulthood “I want to lead you all into the ocean to see if you will drown.” During the summer of 1929 four children come together and change the course of their lives forever. Caleb and Kate Flowers live an isolated existence with their mother until Lionel Schwartz and Roslyn Hellman come to Far Rockaway for the summer. Roslyn, quickly stepping in as ringleader, dominates the summer’s activities, and what appear to be innocent childhood games are actually very real confrontations with the group’s most closely held secrets. As the summer progresses, Caleb and Kate’s relationship grows from the affectionate love of siblings to something less innocent. The ensuing years will bring profound realizations and undeniable passions for all four as they move through adolescence and grow up. Doris Grumbach’s acutely intimate, deeply truthful, and often tragic tale of self-discovery never wavers.

Emerson Whitney writes, "Really, I can't explain myself without making a mess." What follows is that mess-electrifying, gorgeous, defiant.

At Heaven's center, Whitney seeks to understand their relationship to their mother and grandmother, those first windows into womanhood and all its consequences. Whitney retraces a roving youth in deeply observant, psychedelic prose-all the while folding in the work of thinkers like Judith Butler, Donna Haraway, and C. Riley Snorton-to engage transness and the breathing, morphing nature of selfhood.

An expansive examination of what makes us up, Heaven wonders what role our childhood plays in who we are. Can we escape the discussion of causality? Is the story of our body just ours? With extraordinary emotional force, Whitney sways between theory and memory in order to explore these brazen questions and write this unforgettable book.

“An angsty, red-hot dance of doubt . . . this warm and funny story can stand on its own”—from the author of Getting It Right and Finding Their Way (Publishers Weekly).

The last time Elliott fell in love, his fiancé cheated on him. Now fresh out of rehab, Elliott’s confidence lags behind his libido—not that that stops him from lusting after the sexy carpenter working on his kitchen—from a distance. He won’t risk his sobriety on another potential broken heart.

As half of an experienced home renovation duo, Augustus expects this job will be easy. Until he sees the house’s tenant, a man he never thought he’d meet—his ex’s other man. Augustus knows he should say something about their secret, shared past, but he’s tongue-tied by their intense, unwanted attraction.

Despite attempts to keep things professional, the two men give in to temptation and forge a genuine connection—and his developing feelings for Elliott leave Augustus in an impossible situation. If he stays, his secret will always hang over the relationship. But telling the truth might send Elliott spiraling to a new rock bottom and cost Augustus the only man he’s ever really loved.

“The plot could easily have devolved into cliché, but instead Arthur’s talent adds depth, and even the secondary characters leap from the pages.” —Library Journal
