Sinopsis

The mothers of famous men survive only in their sons. This is a rule almost as invariable as a law of nature. Whatever the aspirations and energies of the mother, memorable achievement is not for her. No memoir has been written in this country of the women who bore, fostered, and trained our great men. What do we know of the mother of Daniel Webster, or John Adams, or Patrick Henry, or Andrew Jackson, or of the mothers of our Revolutionary generals? This book is dedicated to Mary Ball Washington, the second wife of Augustine Washington, a planter in Virginia and the mother of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Contents: Mary Washington's English Ancestry The Ball Family in Virginia Coat Armor and the Right to bear it Traditions of Mary Ball's Early Life Revelations of an Old Will Mary Ball's Childhood Good Times in Old Virginia Mary Ball's Guardian and her Girlhood Young Men and Maidens of the Old Dominion The Toast of the Gallants of her Day Her Marriage and Early Life Birthplace of George Washington The Cherry Tree and Little Hatchet The Young Widow and her Family Betty Washington, and Weddings in Old Virginia Defeat in War: Success in Love In and Around Fredericksburg Social Characteristics, Manners, and Customs A True Portrait of Mary Washington Noon in the Golden Age Dinners, Dress, Dances, Horse-races The Little Cloud The Storm Mary Washington in the Hour of Peril Old Revolutionary Letters The Battle-ground France in the Revolution "On with the Dance, let Joy be unconfined" Lafayette and our French Allies In Camp and at Mount Vernon Mrs. Adams at the Court of St. James The First Winter at Mount Vernon The President and his Last Visit to his Mother Mary Washington's Will; her Illness and Death Tributes of her Countrymen

'It is Williams's Welshness that makes the examination of her mixed-race identity distinctive, but it is the humour, candour and facility of her style that make it exceptional . . . an engaging and perceptive voice describing an engrossing and particular personal story.' – Gary Younge
'In its exploration of geographical, racial and cultural dislocation, Sugar and Slate is in the finest tradition of work to have emerged from the black diaspora in recent times.' – The Guardian
'Within this review, I can only scrape the surface of the many dimensions of Williams' memoir, so I strongly encourage you to read this precious book for yourself, and find those parts of it which speak most to you.' – Sarah Tanburn, Nation.Cymru
'Warmly recommended to any curious minds, at 20 years old Sugar And Slate still speaks to us in these modern times, helping to ensure marginal voices remain heard.' – Buzz
A mixed-race young woman, the daughter of a white Welsh-speaking mother and black father from Guyana, grows up in a small town on the coast of north Wales. From there she travels to Africa, the Caribbean and finally back to Wales. Sugar and Slate is a story of movement and dislocation in which there is a constant pull of to-ing and fro-ing, going away and coming back with always a sense of being 'half home'. This is both a personal memoir and a story that speaks to the wider experience of mixed-race Britons. It is a story of Welshness and a story of Wales and above all a story for those of us who look over our shoulder across the sea to some other place.
It would have been so much easier if I had been able to say, 'I come from Africa,' then maybe added under my breath, 'the long way round.' Instead, the Africa thing hung about me like a Welsh Not, a heavy encumbrance on my soul; a Not-identity; an awkward reminder of what I was or what I wasn't.
Once at a seminar, one of those occasions when the word Diaspora crops up too many times and where there aren't too many of us present, the only other Diaspora-person sought me out. His eyes caught mine in recognition of something I can't say I could name, yet I must have responded because later as we chatted over fizzy water and conference packs, he offered quite uninvited and with all the authority of an African: 'People like you? You gotta get digging and if you dig deep enough you're gonna find Africa.'

'I rode back down the hill to the athlete's village. Some of Team Scotland had been watching on the big screen and I arrived to hugs of congratulations. I went inside for a shower and ceremoniously dropped my heart rate monitor into the bin. It was the first day of the rest of my life.'
A little before 1.30 p.m. on Sunday 21 July 2013, Lee Craigie crossed the finish line at Cathkin Braes in the southern outskirts of Glasgow several minutes ahead of her nearest competitor to become the British cross-country mountain bike champion. Lee's win was the culmination of seven years of training and sacrifice, but it marked the beginning of the end of her competitive career; less than a year later, at the same venue, this time representing her native Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, she crossed the line and quit professional bike racing for good.
Lee Craigie is one of Scotland's great bike racers, yet she has accomplished much more since retiring. In Other Ways to Win she tells her story of growing up near Glasgow and discovering the freedom of cycling – skipping French lessons and heading off into the Campsie Fells to see just how far she could ride. These teenage adventures established cycling as the thread which would run through her life – not only through her racing life and into a new life of two-wheeled adventure, but also through the positive impact she would have on the lives of others, particularly encouraging other women through her work with the Adventure Syndicate. Written with breathtaking honesty, she recounts epic adventures along the Tour Divide, Silk Road and the Highland Trail 550, and examines themes of friendship, loss, identity and the power of the outdoors – and, of course, cycling.
Lee Craigie's story is a welcome reminder that there is more than one way to win at cycling – and life.

Tonechaser is the first in a series of audiobooks based around the hardback titled Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen. Veteran rock journalist and author Steve Rosen narrates the nearly 20-hour audiobook but all the interviews between Rosen and the legendary guitarist which occur in the 580-page hardback utilize the actual archival recordings made by Steve dating all the way back to 1978. So, what you are hearing in Tonechaser – Vol. 1 are hours and hours of extraordinarily rare, never before heard conversations presented here for the first time.
There has never been an audiobook such as this one. Rosen had a unique friendship with Van Halen no other writer ever experienced. Because of this very close and meaningful relationship, many of the interviews embedded in Tonechaser – Vol. 1 reveal a profound depth of respect and trust between writer and rockstar.
Van Halen fans will truly love this audiobook. Tonechaser – Vol. 1 is an important piece in the history of Edward Van Halen and a stunning tribute to the legacy of the late and legendary guitarist.

"Refreshing and eloquent" – Libby Purves, The Times
"Quin's acute powers of observation vividly convey the hinterland of the modern general hospital … A medical memoir for the Trainspotting generation." – The Tablet
    ***
Surgeons cut, but physicians… what do physicians actually do? And is it true that other doctors really call them 'the magicians'?
John Quin worked for thirty-three years as a physician for the NHS in both Scotland and England, specialising in endocrinology. Days on the wards were uproariously funny one minute, infinitely tragic the next.
Starting with a stern lesson from the president of the British Society of Gastroenterologists that the younger doctor was not 'a f****** comedian', Dr Quin, Medicine Man is packed with vividly told tales of the joy and reward of getting the diagnosis right, the disaster of getting it wrong.
Darkly amusing and with a keen eye for the absurd, this sharply observed memoir is not only an acute insight into the farcical frustrations and tensions of working in a chronically underfunded system but also a timely reminder of the humanity of the NHS staff who care for us.
