Sinopse

Private Dialogues explores the profound impact of personal correspondence on shaping public history and individual belief systems. By examining previously unexamined letters and diaries, the book uncovers how intimate dialogues influenced pivotal historical moments and the evolution of personal ideologies. These private exchanges, often more candid than public statements, offer unique insights into the vulnerabilities, motivations, and intellectual journeys of historical figures. For example, the book reveals how exchanges among Enlightenment thinkers significantly shaped the era's intellectual landscape.

The book progresses methodically, starting with a theoretical framework that addresses the challenges and ethical considerations of interpreting private documents. It then delves into case studies, focusing on specific historical periods and movements, such as the Romantic period's artists and writers.

Ultimately, Private Dialogues synthesizes these case studies, demonstrating the pervasive influence of private dialogues across diverse fields and time periods. This approach enriches our comprehension of historical and biographical narratives by revealing the human element behind significant events and ideas.

    Start of the French Revolution...

As one of the seminal social revolutions in human history, the French Revolution holds a unique legacy, especially in the West. The early years of the Revolution were fueled by Enlightenment ideals, seeking the social overthrow of the caste system that gave the royalty and aristocracy decisive advantages over the lower classes. But history remembers the French Revolution in a starkly different way, as the same leaders who sought a more democratic system while out of power devolved into establishing an incredibly repressive tyranny of their own once they acquired it.
The French Revolution was a turbulent period that lasted several years, and one of the most famous events of the entire revolution came near the beginning with the Tennis Court Oath. By July of 1788, King Louis XVI agreed to call the Estates-General, a large, traditional legislative body, for the first time since 1614. The country's finances, already quite tenuous, reached a crisis stage in August 1788 as France faced bankruptcy.
In the spring of 1789, Louis XVI summoned the Estates-General. They were to convene at Versailles on April 27, but did not do so until May 5. Late elections continued into the summer as conditions around the country delayed many elections. At the same time, bread prices reached an all-time high, leading to riots throughout the country, particularly in Paris. During the formal ritual that welcomed the Estates-General on May 4, 1789, in a precursor of things to come in the following months, the Third Estate refused to kneel before the king. The deputies of the Third Estate came before the king, walking two at a time, and bowed before Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Not surprisingly, those witnessing the parade of the Estates-General had hoped for reform but came to expect that the Estates-General would serve as a tool of the administration. Instead, the start of the French Revolution would soon follow.

Simplicity, mindfulness, tranquility, attention to detail — all these elements of Japanese philosophy are nor only reflected in the famous tea ceremony but also in kaiseki cuisine.

Why do the pretty Japanese wagashi sweets taste like dusty sugar, why do the tea bowls have dents, why does the soup taste like nothing? Malte Härtig, chef and philosopher, is puzzled when he tries Japan's famous haute cuisine kaiseki for the first time. Neither his Western philosophical approach nor his European culinary training can help him decipher kaiseki. But then he finds a way in through Zen Buddhism and the famous tea ceremony. And with them, he encounters fundamental wisdom and a refreshing attitude, not only towards food, but also towards life.

Malte Härtig takes us on his journey and guides us through a complete kaiseki menu and the experiences he had with it. It begins with the tea itself, continues with the host's preparations, the guest's knowledge, and the making of the tea bowl, and ends with the various dishes. You learn interesting facts and stories about all the elements that have accumulated over thousands of years of tradition: why a fish called hamo plays such an important role, what is special about growing bamboo shoots, and what rice has to do with Japanese identity. And you understand why Japan, the mentality of its inhabitants, and kaiseki cuisine have become so popular in recent years.

The Once and Future Sex - Going...

A vibrant and illuminating exploration of medieval thinking on women's beauty, sexuality, and behavior.

What makes for the ideal woman? How should she look, love, and be? In this high-spirited history, medievalist Eleanor Janega turns to the Middle Ages, the era that bridged the ancient world and modern society, to unfurl its suppositions about women and reveal what's shifted over time—and what hasn't.

Enshrined medieval thinkers, almost always male, subscribed to a blend of classical Greek and Roman philosophy and Christian theology for their concepts of the sexes. For the height of female attractiveness, they chose the mythical Helen of Troy, whose imagined pear shape, small breasts, and golden hair served as beauty's epitome. Casting Eve's shadow over medieval women, they derided them as oversexed sinners, inherently lustful, insatiable, and weak. And, unless a nun, a woman was to be the embodiment of perfect motherhood.

In The Once and Future Sex, Janega unravels the restricting expectations on medieval women and the ones on women today. She boldly questions why, if our ideas of women have changed drastically over time, we cannot reimagine them now to create a more equitable future.
