Sinopse

"Fast Food" explores the evolution and pervasive impact of fast-food chains, from their humble beginnings to their current status as global giants. It examines how these restaurants have reshaped eating habits, business practices, and even agriculture worldwide. The book reveals intriguing facts, such as how franchising enabled rapid expansion and how changing family structures increased the demand for convenient, ready-to-eat meals. The book investigates the business innovations, socio-cultural shifts, and the health, economic, and environmental impacts of the industry. Using historical sources, it progresses from the early pioneers and post-WWII expansion to a critical assessment of fast food's legacy. It highlights the unintended consequences, including rising obesity rates and the consolidation of agricultural practices. Integrating business history, sociology, and nutrition science, "Fast Food" offers a comprehensive understanding of the industry's rise and influence. The book uniquely integrates perspectives from economics, sociology, and environmental science. It addresses contentious issues like unhealthy eating habits with balance, making it valuable for anyone interested in the forces shaping our world.

Having children is joyful, and parents are naturally programmed to raise them to be well-rounded individuals that are fully equipped to face the world, right? This may be the case on another planet, but here on Earth, we all know differently! Parents are suddenly expected to know how to teach their beloved children how to cope with a maelstrom of emotions that are completely alien to them and have reactions that suit the rest of the planet.
The pressure on parents is intense, and they often struggle to ask for help. And that is why we have books and online resources to help. Parenting is the most difficult job in the world so having help is essential. Don’t suffer alone. Use this book to help you navigate the treacherous waters of children’s emotions and emerge from the journey successfully.
Understanding how society affects your child is a major stepping stone to dealing with their anger. America and the modern world accept anger as a cultural state of emotion. Angry images are prevalent on television, in films and music, and even in children’s toys and video games. How is it possible to shield your child from these elements? It is impossible, but you can be vigilant about what they are exposed to and be ready to explain why they sometimes see confusing images.
Another important aspect of anger is the endorphins it releases into our system. They help us shield ourselves from those who would harm us emotionally and physically, and it feels like we become stronger and more confident in anger. Of course, we know this is just a fleeting sentiment and that these feelings wear off, but children can find the sensation appealing.

Today, we do not use our ancient cosmic orientation to relate to the natural world as we once did. It's no longer determined by where we are or what time it is by the Sun's daily motion across the sky. Our perception of the outside world has changed, and we have lost our sense of wholeness within a great system. Factors such as our work and play rhythms, clothing, diet, and travel are affected by climatic and seasonal factors. These factors affect our unconscious sense of timing and our ability to communicate with nature, which we often overlook.
Often we marvel at the apparent serenity and spiritual confidence of ancient people, forgetting that their tools were taught and used within an environment that encouraged them to recognize and embrace natural and divine forces. These tools enabled one to maintain a profound sense of cosmic orientation, keep it, and view one's role as actual spiritual work. In ancient Egypt, a man named Al was gifted with a sense of cosmic orientation.
As dams have been constructed in our era, the Nile no longer produces an annual flood, but understanding the rhythm of that event and others associated with it is essential to understanding Egyptian rituals and ceremonies. To restore cosmic orientation, we need to leave our temporal field of time and enter the visible universe of ancient Egypt, where cosmic rhythms sustained human life, nature, and even the gods.

The modern history of Africa was, until very recently, written on behalf of the indigenous races by the white man, who had forcefully entered the continent during a particularly hubristic and dynamic phase of European history. In 1884, Prince Otto von Bismark, the German chancellor, brought the plenipotentiaries of all major powers of Europe together, to deal with Africa's colonization in such a manner as to avoid provocation of war. This event—known as the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885—galvanized a phenomenon that came to be known as the Scramble for Africa. The conference established two fundamental rules for European seizure of Africa. The first of these was that no recognition of annexation would granted without evidence of a practical occupation, and the second, that a practical occupation would be deemed unlawful without a formal appeal for protection made on behalf of a territory by its leader, a plea that must be committed to paper in the form of a legal treaty.
This began a rush, spearheaded mainly by European commercial interests in the form of Chartered Companies, to penetrate the African interior and woo its leadership with guns, trinkets and alcohol, and having thus obtained their marks or seals upon spurious treaties, begin establishing boundaries of future European African colonies. The ease with which this was achieved was due to the fact that, at that point, traditional African leadership was disunited, and the people had just staggered back from centuries of concussion inflicted by the slave trade. Thus, to usurp authority, to intimidate an already broken society, and to play one leader against the other was a diplomatic task so childishly simple, the matter was wrapped up, for the most part, in less than a decade.

The Histories of Herodotus of Halicarnassus is considered the first work of history in Western literature. Written about 440 BC, the Histories tell the story of the war between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states in the 5th century BC. Herodotus traveled extensively around the ancient world, conducting interviews and collecting stories for his book. The rise of the Persian Empire is chronicled, and the causes for the conflict with Greece. Herodotus treats the conflict as an ideological one, frequently contrasting the absolute power of the Persian king with the democratic government of the Greeks. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia.)

A gripping account of the Allied liberation of Western Europe, masterfully told by Emmy-award winning writer and historian Martin King.

Through the autumn of 1944, Allied troops made their way across Nazi-occupied Europe, liberating towns and villages as they went. Driving Back the Nazis explores this process of liberation, from the arrival of Allied forces in Paris through the emancipation of Belgium to the closing down of Nazi prison camps. But there was a darker side to liberation too - collaborators were harshly punished, and in some cases the liberating forces brought their own troubles with them.

Martin King tells the story of liberation from all sides - we hear the voices of Allied high command, ordinary American and British soldiers, local civilians, and even the defeated German forces.
