"...every chapter of Winning French Minds delivered something new, not only because French language radio being a less-frequented area of study, but also due to the author's ability to tie these radio efforts to events surrounding the French people and events unfolding on the European geopolitical stage." — World War II DatabaseWorld War II was very much a war of the radios. A relatively new technology, radio as a tool was exploited by all of the participants of the war to win the hearts and minds of the people and to steer public opinion. The period 1940 to 1942 was the most volatile of the war, with the Nazis capturing large parts of western Europe and dominating on the Eastern front. At this time France was separated into two nominally independent zones, and public opinion could easily have been swayed in favor of the New German Order. This could have had potentially disastrous consequences for any future Allied attempt to liberate Europe, and so the battle for French minds was launched using the new technology of radio. This narrative of that campaign develops chronologically through a series of topics including major military incidents, youth, food, family, psychological warfare, sports and work, as presented by different radio stations – in particular Radiodiffusion, controlled by Vichy France; Radio Paris, controlled by the Nazis; and the BBC – offering a systematic comparative analysis of radio propaganda messages and building a vivid picture of the evolution of broadcasts in the context of the complex political and social impact of the war on the French population. Using original primary sources from archives in Britain and France, broadcast recordings, radio magazines, and interviews conducted by British Intelligence with those arriving from France during the war, this is a fascinating and unique insight into wartime radio propaganda from 1940 to 1942.

This book is for anyone who wants to better understand autism, from parents and teachers to employers, friends, and individuals on the spectrum themselves. Each chapter provides insights into specific aspects of autism, such as communication, sensory processing, and emotional regulation, offering practical tips for creating supportive environments in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. Additionally, we’ll explore ways to build strong support systems, nurture social connections, and empower neurodivergent individuals to advocate for themselves and their needs.

As we delve into autism, we also examine the importance of neurodiversity—the idea that neurological differences, like autism, are natural variations of the human experience rather than deficits. Embracing neurodiversity means fostering a culture of acceptance, where we value and accommodate these differences rather than expecting everyone to fit the same mold.

Through greater understanding, empathy, and awareness, we can foster a society that not only accepts autism but celebrates the diverse perspectives and skills it brings. This journey requires an open mind, a compassionate heart, and a commitment to making our world more inclusive. As you read, I hope this book inspires you to appreciate the richness of the autism spectrum and to play a part in creating a future where neurodiversity is recognized and embraced.

    Democracy Unmoored - Populism...

The 2016 election of Donald Trump focused people's minds on populism, and most of the attention paid to the subject since has been on the threat it poses to wealthy democracies. In Democracy Unmoored, Samuel Issacharoff takes a far wider-angle view of the phenomenon, covering countries from across the globe: Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Turkey, India, Hungary, Venezuela, and more. Just as importantly, he focuses on populism's attack on the institutions of governance. Democracy requires two critical features: first, a commitment to repeat play such that political actors understand that what goes around comes around; and, second, institutional constraints so that the majority can prevail, albeit not by too much. Democracies must avoid the doomsday scenario in which the contending parties see the next election as the final choice between salvation and perdition. Issacharoff shows how populist governance undermines each of these two critical underpinnings of stable democracy, first by compressing the time horizon to the immediate, and second by eroding institutional constraints on strongman rule. At the same time, Issacharoff highlights the fact that ascendent populists were pushing in an open door as they found democracies in states of disrepair in the post-2008 world.
