Sinopsis

The Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society (JSPPS) is a bi-annual companion journal to the Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society (SPPS) book series (founded 2004 and edited by Andreas Umland, Dr. phil., PhD).

Like the book series, the journal provides an interdisciplinary forum for new original research on the Soviet and post-Soviet world.

The first five issues to date have explored a diverse range of topics, including: Russian media coverage of the war in Ukraine; the experiences of Soviet Afghan war veterans in transnational perspective; discourses of memory and martyrdom in Eastern Europe; gender and anti-authoritarian protest in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine; violence in post-Soviet space; and agency in Belarusian history, politics, and society.

A group of prominent political leaders and thinkers offers a pathway to cut through the gridlock and make our government work.   Every year the President stands before Congress and the American people to deliver a State of the Union Address. What was once an opportunity for honest reflection on accomplishments and goals has become more of a laundry list than a speech—a grab bag of policy ideas, partisan rhetoric, and a healthy dose of wishful thinking. Meanwhile, the gridlock in Washington means that virtually nothing in that speech will amount to anything but talk.    Governor Jon Huntsman and Senator Joe Manchin, two of the most respected and straightforward political leaders in America, have a simple solution for Washington's gridlock. It begins with getting our leaders together at the table to agree to goals not just for their party but for the whole country.   In this book, Huntsman and Manchin are joined by experts and politicians from both sides of the aisle, including thought leaders from business, economics, and academia. Contributors include two former White House Chiefs of Staff; former OMB Director Alice Rivlin; Glenn Hubbard, Dean of Columbia Business School; nine members of Congress committed to solving Washington's endemic problems; and more contributors from every walk of life. These contributors are all making a loud call for a new process of running the United States of America.   “Politics doesn’t have to be a zero-sum game—we are going to share the future, and so we need to find ways to work together…a timely book.” —President Bill Clinton   “President Clinton and I disagreed on many things, but we did agree on two very large goals—balanced budgets and welfare reform. These shared goals allowed us to focus energy on bridging the gap between the parties…By proposing four large goals around which to rally the country, No Labels: A Shared Vision for a Stronger America lays the groundwork for a return to meaningful bipartisan accomplishment in Washington.”—Newt Gingrich

The Communist Manifesto (originally Manifesto of the Communist Party) is an 1848 political pamphlet by German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Commissioned by the Communist League and originally published in London just as the revolutions of 1848 began to erupt, the Manifesto was later recognized as one of the world's most influential political manuscripts. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and then-present) and the problems of capitalism and the capitalist mode of production, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms. The Communist Manifesto summarizes Marx and Engels' theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles". It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism.

In the wake of the September 11 terror attacks, the American government implemented a wave of overt policies to fight the nation's enemies. Unseen and undetected by the public, however, another set of tools were brought to bear on the domestic front. One of today's leading experts on the US security state shows how these "subtle tools" imperiled the very foundations of democracy, from the separation of powers and transparency in government to adherence to the Constitution.Karen Greenberg describes the subtle tools that were forged under George W. Bush in the name of security: imprecise language, bureaucratic confusion, secrecy, and the bypassing of procedural and legal norms. While the power and legacy of these tools lasted into the Obama years, reliance on them increased exponentially in the Trump era, both in the fight against terrorism abroad and in battles closer to home. Greenberg discusses how the Trump administration weaponized these tools to separate families at the border, suppress Black Lives Matter protests, and attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.Subtle Tools paints a troubling portrait of an increasingly undemocratic America where disinformation, xenophobia, and disdain for the law became the new norm, and where the subtle tools of national security threatened democracy itself.

In 1918, Paul Nazaroff was the ringleader of a desperate plot to overthrow the Bolsheviks in Central Asia.

He was betrayed by the Secret Police, who labeled him "the most dangerous counter-revolutionary at large in the Tashkent region."

As he fled from Lenin's men, he was aided by the indigenous peoples of the region, the Kirghiz and the Sarts, and for months he was forced to live the life of a hunted animal.

Marc Booth has written an intriguing introduction to this thrilling story of espionage and survival against all odds, as well as an epilogue that reveals Nazaroff's later fortunes.

When it comes to politics our country is more divided than ever. Even worse, in today's day and age this division has transcended politics and now determines where you are allowed to live, who you can be friends with, and even what beer you can drink. Well, if you are like me then this status quo of "us vs them" politics is far from ideal. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is a legitimate travesty that would have the founders rolling in their graves. I say this because what makes this country so special, in my view, is that our country, the United States of America, is built upon a Constitution that enshrines We the People's power over the nation-state.
In other words, the American people are not subjects, we are citizens, and as citizens it is our inherent right, nay, our responsibility to collectively decide how the levers of US political power are pulled because, at the end of the day, the government answers to us, not the other way around. But we can't effectively do this when we are busy dividing ourselves into teams and fighting each other, can we?
In essence, that is the problem that this work seeks to remedy. This is to say that The Sane Citizens Political Handbook takes some of the most divisive political issues of our time and breaks them down in a non-partisan way so that you, the sane citizen who is fed up with the current Republican/Democrat duopoly, can have a reasonable position on those issues that is grounded in logic, science, and the US Constitution, not one of the two major political parties.
With that said, if you, like me, are tired of party lines and political tribalism then put on your thinking cap, crack open this book and break free from the red and/or blue chains that have been systematically enslaving you.
