Sinopsis

Young people are not disposable regardless of the melanin in their skin.
Samuel G. Puryear, Jr. was blessed to meet an incredible group of young people and their families who lived in a crippling, dysfunctional environment in the East Lake neighborhood in East Atlanta. The astonishing story of a false accusation and its conceivable impact, and their fantastical resilience met with youthful naivety, allowed these kids to blossom into wonderful adults. This story of overcoming adversity allowed a bevy of dreams to come true, although some arrived hobbled and bandaged.
Raised by two southern educators, Samuel drew on his upbringing and shared his truth and life experiences with these youth as he helped them carve a positive narrative of what could come to fruition with a strong education and a solid core of opportunities. These nuggets were woven around the beautiful game of golf.
Diamonds in the Rough was written to serve as an example to other youth and families. It highlights that success is often dressed as a stranger, but upon closer inspection, is only our reflection in an unpolished mirror. This empowering book shows that faith, inspiration and hope are innately built in each of us, before we are forced to build ourselves for the rest of the world. Let’s purchase the proverbial tickets and choose which train we really want to ride. All aboard . . . next stop . . . a great life!

In the wilderness, one false step can make the difference between a delightful respite and a brush with death.
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a twenty-two-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage—and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused.
Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day. After a two-day trek into a remote area of the woods, he stepped away from his campsite and made a series of seemingly trivial mistakes that left him separated from his supplies, wet, and lost, as cold darkness fell.
Enduring days without food or shelter, these men faced the full harsh force of wilderness, the place that they had sought out for tranquil refuge from city life. Lost in the Wild takes listeners with them as they enter realms of pain, fear, and courage, as they suffer dizzying confusion and unending frustration, and as they overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles in a race to survive.

“Pat is one of the greatest mentors I’ve ever had in the world of sports-entertainment.” — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

When Pat Patterson was 17 years old, he was asked to leave his home after telling his parents he was in love . . . with a man. Moving from Montreal to the United States in the 1960s, barely knowing a word of English, he was determined to succeed in the squared circle. Back when homophobia was widespread, Pat lived in the super-macho world of pro wrestling.

In this fascinating and revealing memoir of revolutionary talent, pioneer, and creative savant Patterson recalls the trials and tribulations of climbing to the upper ranks of sports-entertainment — as a performer and, later, as a backstage creative force.

Many in the WWE Universe know Pat Patterson as a ring legend, the prestigious first holder of WWE’s Intercontinental Championship, a WWE Hall of Famer, and one of Vince McMahon’s “stooges” during the Attitude Era. But Patterson is no stooge. He has long been one of Vince McMahon’s trusted advisors. His impact and importance to the nascent stages of WWE are nearly comparable to that of the Chairman himself. Still active in WWE today, Pat delivers his no-holds-barred story of going from unknown to WWE luminary.

“Lee does a masterful job of telling the entire and real story of a racing star who overcame numerous obstacles . . . a book that you cannot put down!” —Brian Zipse, managing partner of Derby Day Racing

On the morning of the 1979 Belmont Stakes, Spectacular Bid stepped on a safety pin in his stall, injuring his foot. He had impressively won the first two races—the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness—but finished third in the Belmont, most likely due to his injury, making him one win shy of becoming the sport’s third straight Triple Crown champion.

But that loss did not prevent him from becoming one of horse racing’s greatest competitors. After taking two months to recover, the battleship gray colt would go on to win twenty-six of thirty races during his career, with two second-place finishes and one third. He was voted the tenth greatest Thoroughbred of the twentieth century according to Blood-Horse magazine, and A Century of Champions places him ninth in the world and third among North American horses—even ahead of the renowned Man o’ War.

This horse biography tells the story of the honest and not-so-glamorous colorful characters surrounding the champion—including Bud Delp, the brash and cocky trainer who was distrustful of the Kentucky establishment, and Ron Franklin, the nineteen-year-old jockey who buckled under the stress and pressure associated with fame—and how they witnessed firsthand the splendor and triumphs of Spectacular Bid. Including contemporary newspaper accounts of Bid’s exploits and interviews with key players in his story, this is an encompassing look into the legacy of one of horse racing’s true champions.
