“Roberson has done her research well, compiling what she found about the four-foot eleven-inch parachutist into an interesting, often inspiring biography.” —Booklist   North Carolina was the site of the first powered airplane flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. Only ten years later, the state could also claim the first parachute jump from an airplane by a woman affectionately known as “Tiny.”   At just over four feet tall and weighing a mere eighty pounds, Tiny married at the age of twelve and was abandoned by her husband one year later. As a result, she worked fourteen-hour shifts at a local cotton mill for forty cents a day and walked home three times daily to feed her baby.   In 1903, she saw a parachute descent from a hot-air balloon for the first time at the Johnny J. Jones Carnival in Raleigh. Charles Broadwick’s thrilling feat inspired her to join the carnival, and after her first jump from a hot-air balloon, she was hooked.   This story of Tiny’s life follows the history of aviation from the early novelty of flight, through the tremendous developments in air travel during World War II, all the way to the Apollo 13 launch in 1970. Tiny was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame alongside such aviation pioneers as Charles Lindbergh and the Wright brothers in 1976.   Little has been written about this pioneer in aviation history, whose contributions, through improvements to the design of parachutes and demonstrations for soldiers, made flying airplanes safer for pilots during World War II.

Award–winning author David Barrie explores the history of the Sextant and the daring mariners who used it to explore, conquer, and map the world.

Since its invention in 1759, a mariner’s most prized possession has been the sextant. A navigation tool that measures the angle between a celestial object and the horizon, the sextant allowed sailors to pinpoint their exact location at sea.

David Barrie chronicles the sextant’s development and shows how it not only saved the lives of navigators in wild and dangerous seas, but played a pivotal role in their ability to map the globe. He synthesizes centuries of seafaring history and the brave sailors who have become legend, including James Cook, Matthew Flinders, Robert FitzRoy, Frank Worsley of the Endurance, and Joshua Slocum, the redoubtable old “lunarian” and first single-handed-round-the-world yachtsman. He also recounts his own maiden voyage, and insights gleaned from his experiences as a practiced seaman and navigator.

In the tradition of Dava Sobel’s Longitude, David Barrie’s compelling and dramatic tale of invention and discovery is an eloquent elegy to one of the most important navigational instruments ever created. Full of heroism, danger, and excitement, told with an infectious sense of wonder, Sextant examines a masterful achievement that changed the course of history.

A “sweet indulgence for your mind, heart, and tastebuds”—now a major motion picture starring Yara Shahidi, Odessa A’zion, and Bette Midler (Molly Tarlov, MTV’s Awkward).   Meeting Mr. Right is never easy. And in a big city like Los Angeles, it’s even harder. So, after years of fruitless efforts at finding a soul mate, Audrey Shulman decided to take a different route to a man’s heart—through his sweet tooth. Whipping up a variety of sinfully delicious cakes, Audrey invaded the savage singles scene fully armed with butter, sugar, and frosting.  Sitting in Bars with Cake recounts Audrey’s year spent baking, bar-hopping, and offering slices of cake to men in the hope of finding a boyfriend (or, at the very least, a date).   With 35 inventive recipes, this charming book pairs each cake with a short essay and tongue-in-cheek lesson about picking up boys in bars.   “This delectable mix of encouragement, anecdote and cream-filling is more than enough reason to start baking and flirting.” —Winnie Holzman, creator of My So-Called Life   “This is a delightfully humble and enthralling tale about cake and bars and boys, but it’s really about life, and what it takes to get up every day and be the person you have always wanted to be.” —Tracy Moore, Jezebel
