Elegant and perceptive musings on the world’s greatest game from the dean of American golf writers This illuminating collection features many of Hebert Warren Wind’s most famous essays, including “Jones Breaks Through,” his masterful portrait of Bobby Jones’s first major championship, won in an epic eighteen-hole playoff against Bobby Cruickshank at the 1923 US Open, and “North to the Links of Dornoch,” an evocative travelogue that established the venerable course in the Scottish Highlands as one of golf’s premier destinations.   Wind captures Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and Ken Venturi in their prime, and brings readers back to an earlier era when Harry Vardon ruled the links. He profiles golf’s female pioneers—Mickey Wright, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, and Joyce Wethered—and sings the praises of Bernard Darwin, “the greatest writer on golf the world has ever known.” In his Sports Illustrated deadline ode, “The 1958 Masters: Palmer at the Fateful Corner,” Wind brings Arnold Palmer’s first major championship to vivid life and coins Augusta National’s most iconic and enduring term: “Amen Corner.”   Lyrical, evocative, and insightful, Herbert Warren Wind’s Golf Book is a must-read for students of the game and fans of classic sports journalism.

From the beloved Field & Stream columnist: “Heavey takes us back to the joys—and occasional pitfalls—of the humble edibles around us” (The Wall Street Journal).   For Bill Heavey, being a sportsman is more than a hobby—it’s a way of life. So despite living inside the DC Beltway, raising a daughter who has an aversion to “nature food,” and having zero experience with foraging or gardening, Bill attempts the ultimate sportsman’s dream: living off the land.   Unsurprisingly, Bill’s foray into catching, finding, and growing his dinner doesn’t go exactly as planned. From battles with tomato-eating squirrels to a grizzly attempt at gutting perch to multiple failures at harvesting an appetizing salad, Bill stumbles through his quest for wild food with blood loss, humiliation, and hard lessons. Still, with the help of his locavore girlfriend and an eccentric neighbor who runs an under-the-table bait business, he manages to eat the way our ancestors did—and uncovers the true meaning of being full.   “Bold, courageous, hilarious, honest, and touching” (Duff Goldman), Bill Heavey’s first full-length book is a must-read look at how we consume, consider, and source our most basic of needs.

Everyone knows Yogi Berra for his famous non sequiturs : "It ain’t over ’til it’s over." "It gets late early out here." "The future ain't what it used to be." They seem like throwaway lines, but over time they reveal deeper meanings—playful truths, like Zen koans. Yogi's not trying to be mystical, but his seemingly simple phrases reveal the depth and wisdom of his mind.
In this book, Yogi takes his experiences as one of baseball's all-time heroes and turns them into funny, appealing, and moving essays on the game of life. His philosophy is plainspoken and down-to-earth, hones through more than 50 years of reflecting on the game of baseball: "Keep trying. Stay humble, Trust your instincts. Most importantly, act. When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
In his inimitable style, using apt examples from his personal trove of baseball stories, Yogi tells us what really matters in life; what it takes to win, how to learn from losses, how to remain true to yourself, and how to be happy even when life is throwing you nothing but knuckleballs.

The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world. Officially first run in 1839, it is now watched in 140 countries on television with viewing figures of more than 500 million. Run in early April at Aintree, Liverpool, this spectacular steeplechase over 30 fearsome fences and four and a half miles has had a history filled with drama. In the first running a Captain Becher fell into the ditch which now bears his name. In 1956 the Queen Mothe's Devon Loch looked set to win, ridden by future thriller writer Dick Francis in the saddle, only to belly flop, legs akimbo, yards from the line. In 1967 there was a pile- up at the fence before the Canal Turn allowing 100/1 outsider Foinavon to come through to win. In the 1970s, when the future of the race looked seriously in doubt, the three amazing wins by Red Rum re-engaged the public, and who can forget the emotional victory of cancer survivor Bob Champion and Aldaniti in 1981? The National has thrown up some great characters such as the Spanish nobleman the Duke of Albuquerque and English racing journalist Lord Oaksey. In the history of the race, the largest number of runners was an enormous field of 66 and the fewest to finish was just two. In 1993 a starting fiasco resulted in the race being declared null and void and, only four years later, it was postponed by a bomb scare and was run on the following Monday.
Little Book of the Grand National tells all these tales, illustrated with great contemporary pictures and photographs.
