Barry Eric Odell Pain was born at 3 Sydney Street in Cambridge on 28th September 1864. He was one of 4 children.
He was educated at Sedbergh School and then Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
In 1889, Cornhill Magazine published his short story ‘The Hundred Gates’. This opened the way for Pain to advance his literary career on several fronts. He became a contributor to Punch and The Speaker, as well as joining the staff of both the Daily Chronicle and Black and White.
Pain was also a noted and prominent contributor to The Granta and from 1896 to 1928 a regular contributor to the Windsor Magazine.
It is often said that Pain was discovered by Robert Louis Stevenson, who compared his work to that of Guy de Maupassant. It’s an apt comparison. Pain was a master of disturbing prose but was also able to inject parody and light comedy into many of his works. A simple premise could in his hands suddenly expand into a world very real but somehow emotionally fraught and on the very edge of darkness.
Barry Pain died on 5th May 1928 in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Prepare yourself for a gripping journey back into the darkest corners of post-war London and the shocking story of the infamous Rillington Place murders that shook London in the early 1950’s.  Based on the original trial transcripts, it is for you to decide if an innocent man was sent to the gallows.

On January 11, 1950, Timothy Evans of 10 Rillington Place stood trial at the Old Bailey, accused of the murder of his own baby daughter.  The courtroom was heavy with tension as the prosecution, led by Mr Christmas Humphreys, began delving into the mysterious death of his wife, building their case on the sworn testimony of a fellow tenant who resided on the ground floor - Mr John Reginald Christie.  The jury took only 35 minutes to find him guilty and on March 9, still protesting his innocence, Timothy Evans was hanged at Pentonville Prison.Three and a half years later, Christie, by now destitute and homeless, was arrested while loitering on the embankment near Putney Bridge in London.  And so begins one of the most infamous trials in British legal history, when Christie, a seemingly unassuming and quiet man is charged with the murder of his wife, Ethel.  A serial killer and necrophiliac, he is tried in the same court as Evans and in spite of his plea of insanity, he is destined to stand on the very same gallows at Pentonville Prison as Timothy Evans.

Starring RONALD PICKUP as John Reginald Halliday Christie with Jonathan Wrather, Terence Edmond, Trevor Nichols, John Baddeley, Robin Welch, Nicola Barber, Elizabeth Mansfield, Howard Ward and full supporting cast.

Also available as part of the Great British Trials Box Set, a fascinating eight-hour collection of true crime dramas, featuring the trials of Ruth Ellis, Dr Crippen, Timothy Evans & John Reginald Halliday Christie.

  • Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee - A Native Tribe Story about the American West - cover

Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee -...

The history of the American West is woven with the stories of lands that were once home to indigenous peoples whose lives were irrevocably transformed by the arrival of European settlers. The beginning of this contact was marked by curiosity, fear, and misunderstanding, as both sides struggled to comprehend the profound differences in their cultures and ways of life. Initially, this period was characterized by cautious encounters where indigenous communities and the newcomers exchanged gifts, ideas, and sometimes even skills. However, as explorers, traders, and missionaries increasingly set foot in native territories, the dynamics began to shift dramatically.
For many Native tribes, these early interactions brought both opportunity and challenge. The appearance of strangers from across the vast and mysterious ocean introduced new technologies and worldviews that were entirely foreign to the indigenous people. The initial exchange was not always violent, yet it set in motion a gradual process of disruption. Encounters with the newcomers soon revealed differences in attitudes toward land ownership and resource management. Where Native tribes had long held a spiritual connection to the land, considering it a shared, communal resource, European settlers arrived with the concept of individual property rights, leading to disputes and tensions that would only grow over time.
As the settlers journeyed further into the heart of the West, their presence ignited both awe and anxiety among the Native populations. The natural beauty and abundance of the land captured the imaginations of many settlers, yet it also raised concerns among indigenous communities about the lasting impact on the ecosystems and the delicate balance that had sustained them for generations.
