Beschreibung

Zulu Warriors explores the captivating ascent of the Zulu Kingdom in Southern Africa, revealing how a relatively small entity rose to prominence and challenged the British Empire. The book highlights Shaka Zulu's military innovations, such as the short spear (Iklwa) and the Impi regiment system, which revolutionized warfare and contributed to the Zulu's initial dominance.

Examining the reigns of subsequent leaders, like Dingane and Mpande, the narrative illustrates their varying approaches to leadership and diplomacy amidst conflicts with both the Boers and the British, providing insights into African military history and the complexities of 19th-century colonialism.

The book unfolds chronologically, beginning with pre-Shakan society and culminating in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. It critically analyzes primary and secondary sources, including accounts from British soldiers and oral traditions, to present a balanced portrayal.

The narrative emphasizes the Zulu Kingdom's sophisticated blend of political organization, social engineering, and adaptable leadership, arguing that these factors were crucial to its success and resistance against colonial encroachment.

Intended for those interested in world history and military history, Zulu Warriors provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the subject. The book acknowledges the limitations of solely focusing on military and political aspects, recognizing that the social and cultural dimensions warrant a separate, dedicated study.

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 - December 21, 1940) was an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer. He is best known for his four novels—This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is The Night—depicting the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age. Fitzgerald is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. In this recording, Fitgerald reads from Shakespeare's Othello, John Keats' Ode to a Nightingale, and John Masefield's On Growing Old.

A Christian Perspective on the Joys of Reading

In today's technology-driven culture, reading has become a lost art. With smartphones offering information at the tap of a finger, reading a book is often seen as a tedious and outdated activity. Christians are not immune to this problem, as many find it hard to read books—even the Bible—consistently and attentively. Recovering the Lost Art of Reading addresses these timely issues by exploring the importance of reading generally as well as studying the Bible as literature, giving practical suggestions along the way. In this helpful guide, Leland Ryken and Glenda Faye Mathes encourage a new generation of readers to overcome the notion of reading as a duty and learn to see it as a delight.

The Hot Glue Gun Chronicles is a winner of the 2023 Philosophy Media Group Publishing Competiton and the debut manuscript from poet & scholar Ashley Crooks-Allen. This collection of poetry explores themes of identity, healing, and belonging through the lens of an Afro-Latinx Queer identifying poet and scholar.
“The Hot Glue Gun Chronicles is a flamingassemblage of penetrating verse and poetic musicality. Crooks-Allen’s timely offering, in the tradition of Black queer poets like June Jordan and Pat Parker before them, does not shy away from the straight-up truth. In their words, we might very well locate the keys to our own internal freedom.”
    - Darnell Moore, author of No Ashes in The Fire: Coming of Age Black and Free in America
"What an honor it has been to cultivate this manuscript and elevate the voice of Dr. Ashley Crooks-Allen. I published this book because I believe in its mission- to put together the broken and to create beauty from unexpected pieces. Ashley invites us to revisit subjects we may have fooled ourselves into thinking we'd moved on from- gently saying 'Aht-aht! There's more work to do here.'"

Emily and I combined our powers and had an in-depth chat about Laurie Lawrence, his character arc and the lack of it in every-single-little-women adaptation. In the novel, Laurie starts out as a very idle and sometimes pretty misogynistic figure and it is thanks to Amy he becomes a better person, but these elements of him are not in the adaptations.
Friedrich Bhaer is based on philosopher Henry David Thoreau. Louisa was in love with him and he appears in literal disguise in all of her novels. He is also based on Alcott's favourite writer, the German poet Goethe. Unlike Greta Gerwig lies to millions of people, Jo and Friedrich never argue in the book, and Friedrich is the one who helps her to become a writer. Laurie is partially based on Alcott's ex, Laddie Wisniewski, and her friend Alf Whitman. She had a maternal relationship with both of these men who were younger than she. One of the goals of the Little Women podcast is to examine these relationships, and how Little Women adaptations ignore their significance. 150 year Laurie problem was the first episode of the Little Women podcast and it has become one of my most downloaded episodes. I am very humbled and happy about this. I do think it is imporant that film industry would pay more attention to his character. I hope you enjoy this chat between Emily and I.
Please notice that this is a short-form book, based on a podcast episode.
Little Women Podcast is an ongoing series of video essays, articles and podcast episodes that examines the intersections in Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women.
Hosted by Alcott essayist Niina Niskanen. Regular visits from literal scholars and Little Women fans.
