Sinopse

War and Food examines the critical role of food in shaping military outcomes throughout history, arguing that access to sustenance has often dictated military strategy and troop morale. Moving beyond traditional battlefield narratives, the book emphasizes the logistical and societal factors underpinning warfare, illustrated by the historical reliance on local food resources and the evolution toward complex supply lines. The book explores how food shortages and rationing have directly influenced the success or failure of military campaigns.

The book progresses through key stages, beginning with the fundamentals of wartime food economics before delving into specific case studies. For example, the impact of food scarcity on troop morale during the Napoleonic Wars highlights the critical consequences of disrupted supply routes which forced the rise of foraging as a survival strategy. Later, technological advancements in food preservation, like canning during the American Civil War, revolutionized military logistics.

Ultimately, the book synthesizes historical examples to provide insights into modern military food policies and the ongoing challenges of food security in conflict zones. By drawing from diverse primary sources, including military logistics reports and soldiers' diaries, War and Food provides a unique perspective on military events. The book's accessible style and robust analysis make it valuable to military historians, food studies scholars, and anyone interested in the intersection of history, food, and society.

The way we glow when having a great conversation, building off each other’s ideas, finding solutions we can all be satisfied with. The way we spark together when marching in protest. This is living democracy.
Yes, the world looks bleak. Across our society there’s a mounting sense of desperation in the face of the climate crisis, gaping economic inequality and racial injustice, increasing threat of war, and a post-truth politics divorced from reality. Extinction is in the air.
But what if the solutions to our ecological, social and political crises could all be found in the same approach? What if it was possible for us to not just survive, but thrive?
In Living Democracy, Tim Hollo offers bold ideas and a positive vision. It’s the end of the world as we know it, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. In fact, around the globe, people and communities are beginning an exciting new journey.
This book will inspire you, inform you, and get you fired up to co-create our common future. A living democracy.

This book is all about mass disappearances which have occurred in history.
These events run the gamut from entire villages whose inhabitants disappeared to a flight of military planes gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle.
Many ships have disappeared so I only cover a few of the most notorious ones.
I also do not usually cover missing families or where just several people have gone absent.
It is much more interesting to me if an entire army became lost and missing or strange things happened to a group which has become a big mystery.
There are also some recent missing persons mysteries since these events happen even in the modern age.

With characteristic self-deprecating humour, A.A. Milne recalls the formative events of his life: from a blissfully happy childhood to the writing of Winnie-the-Pooh and Christopher Robin.

    –––––––––––––

In his classic memoirs A. A. Milne, with his characteristic self-deprecating humour, recalls a blissfully happy childhood in the company of his brothers, and writes with touching affection about his father whom he adored.

From Westminster School he won a scholarship to Cambridge University where he edited the university magazine, Granta. He then went out into the world, determined to be a writer. He was assistant editor at Punch Magazine and enjoyed great success with his novels, plays and stories. And of course he is best remembered for his children's novels and verses featuring Winnie-the-Pooh and Christopher Robin.

This is both an account of how a writer was formed and a charming period piece on literary life – Milne met countless famous authors including H. G. Wells, J. M Barrie of Peter Pan fame and Rudyard Kipling.

»We are at a turning point in human history. To stop climate breakdown and extinction, environmental movements need to be actively anti-racist and join struggles for social justice.«Carola RacketeIn 2019, Carola Rackete became publicly known for docking the sea rescue vessel »Sea-Watch 3« in Italy and thereby challenging a nationaldecree that contradicted internationalobligations to engage in sea rescue. Due to this act of civil disobedience and her public confrontation of the Italian far right and the structural racism of the EU's Fortress Europe policy, Carola became a powerful symbol for people seeking to take practical action for a world based on justice and equality. Carola has worked in the polar regions since 2011 and holds a degree in natural resources management. Consequently, her book shows how the ecological crises we are facing today are rooted in social and political power structures. The book details moments of the rescue mission but also connects the dots to forced migration and the urgency of our environmental predicament. Overall, it is a call to engage and act to become part of initiatives and movements struggling for social and environmental justice. This version of the book includes a new afterword focused on centring justice and human rights in nature and biodiversity conservation-a topic often overlooked by climate activists in the Global North. The authors will donate the revenue from this book to the association borderline-europe-Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V. in order to launch a new criminalization fund. The money from this fund will be used to support refugees who are criminalized in the EU for fleeingtoEurope.Acknowledgements: This audio book has been made possible by the voluntary contributions of many people, most notably Marysa Abbas who is the voiceover artist of this audioproject, Diane Hielscher who provided her studio "LifeX Lab-wir machen Medien für eine neue Welt" for the recordings and production, Céline Keller who contributed the cover art, Alfio Furnari from Borderline-Europe who managed administration and contracts, the management of liberaudio as well as Anne Weiss who got the projectrolling and connected everyone.
