Sinopsis

"Hittite Kingdom" unveils the significant role of the Hittites, a Bronze Age superpower often overshadowed by better-known civilizations. This book explores the Hittites' sophisticated governance, including the king's role and the 'pankus' council, innovative military strategies like chariot warfare, and intricate diplomatic relations with Egyptian and Mesopotamian powers. The Hittites' interactions weren't isolated; they were part of a complex web of alliances and conflicts that shaped the ancient Near East. Of particular interest is their debated use of iron weaponry and the strategic importance of Hattusa, their capital.

The book provides a comprehensive overview, starting with the historical and geographical context of the Hittite Empire. It delves into their unique blend of centralized authority, adaptive military tactics, and shrewd diplomacy. By examining treaties, royal decrees, and military accounts, the book reconstructs a detailed picture of Hittite society.

It progresses through the political structure, military innovations, and interactions with neighboring empires, culminating in an analysis of the empire's decline and lasting influence on subsequent Anatolian cultures. This approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of the ancient world.

Although cryptozoology is often scoffed at and widely considered a pseudoscience, one of the reasons it made men like Barnum rich and continues to fascinate people today is the fact that people realize they’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to identifying all the different forms of life on Earth. As Martin DelRio pointed out in The Loch Ness Monster, “Animals previously unknown to science have been found more than once in the past hundred years. For instance, there's the megamouth shark (megachasma pelagios), a fifteen-foot-long creature weighing nearly a ton. The first specimen was discovered on November 15, 1976, when it was found entangled in the drag anchor of a U.S. Navy ship. The new creature wasn't described scientifically until 1983…The megamouth remains the only species in its genus, and the only genus in its order.”
While cryptids like Bigfoot and the Yeti have become popular in recent decades, none of them can touch the notoriety of the Loch Ness Monster, a large, unknown creature allegedly living in a loch in the Highlands of Scotland. Was it a relic dinosaur or perhaps an entirely new species? New photographs and new eyewitness sightings fueled a growing debate and transformed the Loch Ness Monster, also known as Nessie, into an instantly recognizable staple of pop culture, to the extent that hundreds of thousands of visitors came to Loch Ness every year in hopes of catching a glimpse of the loch’s famous inhabitant.
The Loch Ness Monster remains an international brand and the best-known cryptid in the world, but after almost 100 years of fame and media attention, what do people really know about this cryptid, and is there any proof that there really is something large and unknown living in a remote Scottish loch?

What is Pakistan? The name refers to a seventy-year-old post-colonial product of the bloodiest partition of territory and population that accompanied the end of British empire in South Asia. But the region of the Indus Valley has a four-thousand-year-old history, and was the site of one of the earliest and greatest riverine civilizations in the world. Although the modern nation of Pakistan as we know it was created as a homeland for the Muslims of British India, it is impossible to understand the complex tapestry of linguistic, ethnic, and cultural identities and tensions of the region without tracing its deep past.

This Very Short Introduction looks at Pakistan as one of the two nation-states of the Indian sub-continent that emerged in 1947. Pippa Virdee reaches into the ancient past to demonstrate the influence of trajectories of human settlement and civilization on Pakistan's contemporary political arena, and shows how the longer continuities between the land and its peoples are as important as the short-term changes in the political landscape. She considers Pakistan's religion and society, the state and the military, everyday life, popular culture, languages and literature, as well as Pakistan's relationship with the rest of the world. Virdee also looks to the challenges of the twenty-first century and the future of Pakistan.

'Tony Rogers consistently reveals new material regarding WW2 operations, in this case with the captivating account of an LRDG hero.' —Ex-Lance-corporal X, QGM, author of The SAS and LRDG Roll of Honour, 1941-47

John Olivey, an officer in the Long Range Desert Group, saw action in the Western Desert, where he was awarded the Military Cross; he fought in the Dodecanese, for which he was decorated a second time; and saw active service on mainland Greece, and in Istria. In autumn 1943, he was deployed to the Aegean and in October tasked with leading 'Olforce' in an ill-conceived operation to take the island of Levitha. Of some fifty LRDG, he was one of only seven to avoid capture. During the battle for Leros in November, he commanded X2 Patrol at Clidi, a key hilltop position. After British forces on Leros capitulated, Olivey was taken prisoner.

While being marched through Athens with hundreds of other prisoners of war, he escaped. Aided by local residents, Olivey remained in hiding in German-occupied Athens. It would be more than four months before he was at last able to return to Allied territory. During this time, he wrote a compelling, brutally honest, and often amusing personal account, describing his involvement in what was an eventful and momentous chapter in the history of the LRDG. This is his story.

"Beyond Good and Evil" by Friedrich Nietzsche is a thought-provoking and challenging work that explores fundamental questions about morality, truth, and the nature of existence. In this book, Nietzsche offers a scathing critique of traditional morality and the idea of objective truth, arguing instead for a new ethical framework that is based on the individual will to power. Drawing on a wide range of philosophical and cultural influences, Nietzsche takes readers on a journey of self-discovery that challenges many of our most deeply held assumptions about the world. With its bold and original ideas, "Beyond Good and Evil" is a classic of Western philosophy that continues to inspire and challenge readers today.
