Sinopsis

Lafayette—the novel
Courtier to Crown Fugitive
TheStory of Adventure, Romance & Revolution
Breathing life into the mythology.  The world knows the Hero of Two Worlds, Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, best known today as Lafayette.  But author S.P. Grogan wants us to delve into Lafayette's early days of those major events of France in the 1760's -1770's which forged into the future major general's character the impassioned drive toward his ultimate goal: to be a victorious soldier bathed in glory.
Follow how he seeks to deal with women in his life: his cousin, those of the street, his future wife Adrienne, and his quest to be like others, and gain an influential mistress.
This period of  Lafayette's life, always vague with little historic facts, has been fleshed out beginning with Gilbert's rural birth in the Auvergne hills to his 19th birthday as an active player in Queen Marie Antoinette's dissolute clique.
Lafayette – Courtier to Crown Fugitive is an 'action' story of highway robbers, spies, and court intrigues. The reader can see the developing psychological make-up of Lafayette; his search for a father-figure, his need for supportive love, and his blind passion for glory and fame.  What is revealed is a young boy in the throes of transformation under the influences of Queen Marie Antoinette's life style of spoiled privilege, his attitude towards his young wife in a forced marriage, the secrets within the Masonic fraternity, the writings of Voltaire, the Encyclopédistes, and the voice of the anti-slavery Abbot Raynal.  All come together to transform his mind-set as Gilbert, blinded by class liberté idealism, seeks to run away to join the American revolutionary army.  In doing so, he becomes a fugitive from the King's edicts, and his ensuing flight and pursuit climax in a showdown on the beaches of Spain.
Author S.P. Grogan is a best-selling author specializing in historical fiction.

In The Settlement, Jock Serong reimagines in urgent, compelling prose the ill-fated exploits of George Augustus Robinson at the settlement of Wybalenna—a venture whose blinkered, self-interested cruelty might stand for the colonial enterprise itself. On the windswept point of an island at the edge of van Diemen's Land, the Commandant huddles with a small force of white men and women. He has gathered together, under varying degrees of coercion and duress, the last of the Tasmanians, or so he believes. His purpose is to save them—from a number of things, but most pressingly from the murderous intent of the pastoral settlers on their country. The orphans Whelk and Pipi, fighting for their survival against the malevolent old man they know as the Catechist, watch as almost everything about this situation proves resistant to the Commandant's will. The wind, the spread of disease, the strange black dog that floats in on the prow of a wrecked ship…But above all the Chief, the leader of the exiles, before whom the Commandant performs a perverse, intimate dance of violence and betrayal.‘An extraordinarily vivid imagining of one of the most significant encounters in Australian history.' AMANDA LOHREY‘Grips from the first page. It's unsentimental, truthful and profound – all in a milieu effortlessly imagined.' DON WATSON

Based on a historic literary hoax, this “charming” novel is “a love letter to the creative process” from one of Spain’s most original authors (Kirkus Reviews).    José Gálvez and Carlos Rodríguez are poets. Or, at least, they’d like to be. Sons of Lima’s elite in the early twentieth century, they scribble poorly constructed verses and read the greats: Rilke, Rimbaud, and, above all others, Juan Ramón Jímenez, the Spanish Maestro. Desperate for Jímenez’s latest work, unavailable in Lima, they decide to ask him for a copy.   Certain Jímenez would never send his book to a couple of dilettantes, they concoct a plan à la Cyrano de Bergerac. They write to him posing as the lovely, imaginary Georgina Hübner. Incredibly, the poet takes the bait and responds with a book and letter. So begins the epistolary romance. As the maestro falls in love with Georgina, he writes his finest poetry. But when the mail delivery is stalled during the dockworkers’ strike, the scheme begins to unravel and reveal the vulgar truth.   “This sweepingly beautiful translation will enchant readers. Gómez Bárcena’s style is both fresh and classic, delightful and mysterious, and his characters—who feel like living, breathing creatures—are sure to captivate even as they break your heart.” —Library Journal, starred review   “Anyone who has ever wept over a poem or burned to write more and better and despaired because their talent let them down will read this novel and come away feeling understood.” —National Book Review   “Gómez Bárcena tackles the most serious topics while masterfully showing how to write a story that’s simultaneously a comedy, a tragedy, and a portrait of another culture. The style is magnificent, the narration told with originality, pulse, and rhythm. There’s little more to say: read Gómez Bárcena.” —El Cultural

As a tomboy growing up in Kansas, Amelia Earhart delighted in trying new and risky things, once she even built a roller-coaster in her grandparent’s backyard. In her 20s she fell in love with flight while watching an aerobatics exhibition and grew even more enthralled when she took her first airplane ride. At age 24 she earned her pilot’s wings and in 1928 took part in the transatlantic "Friendship" flight. In 1937 she married publisher George Putnam who managed her career and promoted her zealously, ensuring her status as the world’s best-known aviatrix. The next year she soloed the Atlantic, afterward receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and began championing the efforts of women to explore careers traditionally held by men. Tragically, just days before her 40th birthday her plane vanished en route to a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean as she neared the end of her round-the-world journey. After an exhaustive search, no trace of the plane or Amelia was ever found.
