Summary

Global warming: Is it natural or is it manmade? This issue is of crucial importance for both climate science and climate policy. We update the ongoing controversy. This booklet also discusses chaotic uncertainties of climate models and how to overcome them, presents new thinking on Climategate and the Hockeystick graph - and shows what we can say about the absence of post-1979 warming in the temperature data of the 20th century.

Demystifying forces of the state, gangs, and revolutionary violence. In Gang Politics, Kristian Williams examines our society's understanding of social and political violence, what gets romanticized, misunderstood, or muddled. He explores the complex intersections between "gangs" of all sorts—cops and criminals, Proud Boys and Antifa, Panthers and skinheads—arguing that government and criminality are intimately related, often sharing critical features. As society becomes more polarized and conflict more common, Williams's analysis is a crucial corrective to our usual ideas about the role violence might or should play in our social struggles.

“Parker has used recently declassified American materials and interviews . . . to reconstruct the steps that led to the creation of Operation Brother Sam.” —The American Historical Review   When the Brazilian military overthrew President João Goulart in 1964, American diplomats characterized the coup as a “100 percent Brazilian movement.” It has since become apparent, largely through government documents declassified during the course of research for this book, that the United States had an invisible but pervasive part in the coup.   Relying principally on documents from the Johnson and Kennedy presidential libraries, Phyllis Parker unravels the events of the coup in fascinating detail. The evidence she presents is corroborated by interviews with key participants.   US interference in the Goulart regime began when normal diplomatic pressure failed to produce the desired enthusiasm from him for the Alliance of Progress. Political and economic manipulations also proving ineffective, the United States stood ready to back a military takeover of Brazil’s constitutional democracy.   US operation “Brother Sam” involved shipments of petroleum, a naval task force, and tons of arms and ammunition in preparation for intervention during the 1964 coup. When the Brazilian military gained control without calling on the ready assistance, U.S. policy makers immediately accorded recognition to the new government and set in motion plans for economic support.

From the inability of wealth to make us happier, to our catastrophic blindness to the credit crunch, "Economyths" reveals ten ways in which economics has failed us all. Forecasters predicted a prosperous year in 2008 for financial markets - in one influential survey the average prediction was for an eleven per cent gain. But by the end of the year, the Standard and Poor's 500 index - a key economic barometer - was down 38 per cent, and major economies were plunging into recession. Even the Queen asked - Why did no one see it coming? An even bigger casualty was the credibility of economics, which for decades has claimed that the economy is a rational, stable, efficient machine, governed by well-understood laws. Mathematician David Orrell traces the history of this idea from its roots in ancient Greece to the financial centres of London and New York, shows how it is mistaken, and proposes new alternatives. "Economyths" explains how the economy is the result of complex and unpredictable processes; how risk models go astray; why the economy is not rational or fair; why no woman (until 2009) had ever won the Nobel Prize for economics; why financial crashes are less Black Swans than part of the landscape; and, finally, how new ideas in mathematics, psychology, and environmentalism are helping to reinvent economics.

One Day University presents a series of audio lectures recorded in real-time from some of the top minds in the United States. Given by award-winning professors and experts in their field, these recorded lectures dive deep into the worlds of religion, government, literature, and social justice. The First Amendment to the Constitution is considered a pillar of our democracy. By placing checks on governmental power to silence its populace, its protections have important ramifications. But the First Amendment is not simply a legal concept - it has significant and far-reaching cultural implications as well. This course will consider questions of how we define speech, and when the state or others can interfere with individual rights. What the First Amendment protects is largely a function of why it offers protection - a commitment to democracy and liberty. In pursuit of these ideals, courts have often placed a higher value on political speech, although no such distinction is made in the Constitution. In recent years, American universities today have become hotbeds not just for vigorous debate but for questioning whether vigorous debate even has a rightful place on campus. Speech codes, cancelled guest lecturers, and hecklers regularly make headlines. This talk will explore how our colleges have become lightning rods for conflict about the First Amendment.
