In 1972, philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn threw an ashtray at Errol Morris. This book is the result. At the time, Morris was a graduate student. Now we know him as one of the most celebrated and restlessly probing filmmakers of our time, the creator of such classics of documentary investigation as The Thin Blue Line. Kuhn was—and, posthumously, remains—a star in his field and author of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, a landmark book that introduced the concept of "paradigm shifts" to the larger culture. And Morris thought the idea was bunk.

The Ashtray tells why—and in doing so, it makes a powerful case for Morris's way of viewing the world, and the centrality to that view of a fundamental conception of the necessity of truth. "For me," Morris writes, "truth is about the relationship between language and the world: a correspondence idea of truth." He has no patience for philosophical systems that aim for internal coherence and disdain the world itself. Morris wants to establish as clearly as possible what we know and can say about the world, reality, history, our actions, and interactions. It's the fundamental desire that animates his filmmaking. Truth may be slippery, but that doesn't mean we have to grease its path of escape through philosophical evasions. Rather, Morris argues, it is our duty to do everything we can to establish and support it.

A dynamic historian revisits the workers’ internationals, whose scope and significance are commonly overlooked.
In current debates about globalization, open and borderless elites are often set in opposition to the immobile and protectionist working classes. This view obscures a major historical fact: for around a century—from the 1860s to the 1970s—worker movements were at the cutting edge of internationalism.
The creation in London of the International Workingmen’s Association in 1864 was a turning point. What would later be called the “First International” aspired to bring together European and American workers across languages, nationalities, and trades. It was a major undertaking in a context marked by opening borders, moving capital, and exploding inequalities.
In this urgent, engaging work, historian Nicolas Delalande explores how international worker solidarity developed, what it accomplished in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and why it collapsed over the past fifty years, to the point of disappearing from our memories.

In Dr. J. Bruce Stewart's transformative work, "The Race Ahead," readers are taken on a compelling journey into the depths of racial bias ingrained in American society and the mind itself. This groundbreaking book not only diagnoses the presence and origins of racial biases but also prescribes a sophisticated blueprint for eradicating them, aimed at rewiring how we perceive and interact across racial lines.
Dr. Stewart begins by exploring the psychological foundations of bias, focusing particularly on the amygdala's role in triggering automatic and subconscious responses associated with fear and othering. He explains how these psychological processes, though once essential to human survival, now perpetuate division and misunderstanding in a diverse society. Using relatable anecdotes and rigorous research, Stewart shows how deep-seated fears and stereotypes shape our interactions, often in ways we are not consciously aware of.
Central to the book is the "Last Mile" problem, a concept Stewart uses to describe the final and most challenging steps in the journey toward racial equity. These steps involve not only acknowledging and understanding biases but actively implementing strategies to dismantle them within ourselves and our institutions. Stewart argues that this last mile is fraught with complexities and challenges, as it requires changing longstanding societal structures and confronting uncomfortable truths.
Part historical review, part psychological exploration, and part sociological study, "The Race Ahead" delves into the origins and perpetuations of racial myths and stereotypes. From the misrepresentations in media and literature that shape public perception to the policies and practices in education and law enforcement that reinforce racial disparities, Stewart leaves no stone unturned.
"The Race Ahead" is an urgent call to action, demanding a radical shift in both mindset and behavior from all sectors of society. It challenges readers to confront their biases

The legality of abortion in the United States is subject to individual state laws. In 1973, Roe v. Wade made the first abortion case to be taken to the Supreme Court, which had made it federally legal. In 1992, Roe was partially overturned by Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which stated that states cannot place legal restrictions posing an undue burden for "the purpose or effect of placing a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus." In 2022, both Roe and Casey were overturned, and abortions are now subject to regulations based on state laws once again. Individual states can regulate and limit the use of abortion, some of which already have through the use of "trigger laws", which made abortion illegal within the first and second trimesters when Roe was overturned. Eight states—Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wisconsin—still have pre-Roe abortion bans in their laws, which may be enforced too.
This reading provides a thorough overview of the federal legalisation regarding the legality of abor-tion. It presents a judicial history and legislative response of the US federal institutions. In addition this collection is enriched with information which are indispensable part of every abortion debate in the United States.
