Summary

The Diamond neighborhood was an all-black enclave in the mostly white town of Norco, Louisiana, aptly named for the New Orleans Refining Co., an industrial processing plant. Margie Eugene Richard was raised in the shadow of a giant chemical plant operated by Shell, and witnessed her neighbors fall ill amid the toxic waste the plant emitted year after year. Her own sister, Naomi, eventually succumbed to a rare lung disease linked to environmental hazards. Determined to see Shell take responsibility for its actions, Margie and her neighbors—largely poor and with few obvious resources—educated themselves not only on the consequences of environmental poison but also on how to fight back. The battle took them from Diamond's four streets all the way to The Hague and beyond. The unexpected results won Margie the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize and helped clean up a community. With riveting narrative drive, Night Fire illustrates how determination and grit can move even the most stubborn of corporate giants.

For those who have experienced a transpersonal or spiritual awakening, it can be difficult to come back to living in the day-to-day world. All of a sudden, you may be faced with challenges such as anxiety, depression, despair, the Dark Night of the Soul, and a multitude of other energetic and spiritual imbalances. Living in a Quantum Reality helps to identify the common side effects of wholeness consciousness and offers a variety of exercises, meditations, and healing methods to cope with having a higher consciousness in a world that is still struggling to catch up.Living in a Quantum Reality helps you understand your “impossible” transpersonal experiences by integrating quantum physics into psychology and offering a user-friendly description of the many layers or spheres of energy and consciousness. This vision of the quantum self synthesizes spiritual thought with an array of scientific disciplines, and is supported by the author’s own direct experiences, as well as her clients’ experiences with larger reality. This book is a step toward advancing the field of psychology, and especially the practice of psychotherapy, to catch up with the latest, more quantum, worldview, one that is more comprehensive for understanding the reaches of our human consciousness and psycho-spiritual experiences.

In December 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated coastal regions of Sri Lanka. Six months later, Michele Ruth Gamburd returned to the village where she had been conducting research for many years and began collecting residents' stories of the disaster and its aftermath: the chaos and loss of the flood itself; the sense of community and leveling of social distinctions as people worked together to recover and regroup; and the local and national politics of foreign aid as the country began to rebuild. In The Golden Wave, Gamburd describes how the catastrophe changed social identities, economic dynamics, and political structures.

We have long attributed man's violent, aggressive, competitive nature to his animal ancestry. But what if we are just as given to cooperation, empathy, and morality by virtue of our genes? What if our behavior actually makes us apes? What kind of apes are we? From a scientist and writer E. O. Wilson has called "the world authority on primate social behavior" comes a fascinating look at the most provocative aspects of human nature-power, sex, violence, kindness, and morality-through our two closest cousins in the ape family. For nearly twenty years, Frans de Waal has worked with both the famously aggressive chimpanzee and the lesser-known egalitarian, erotic, matriarchal bonobo, two species whose DNA is nearly identical to that of humans. De Waal shows the range of human behavior through his study of chimpanzees and bonobos, drawing from their personalities, relationships, power struggles, and high jinks important insights about our human behavior. The result is an engrossing and surprising narrative that reveals what their behavior can teach us about our own nature."An informative and engaging work." -Library Journal"De Waal offers vivid, often delightful stories of politics, sex, violence and kindness in the ape communities he has studied to illustrate such questions as why we are irreverent toward the powerful and whether men or women are better at conflict resolution."-Publishers Weekly"Never has he [de Waal] written better on his great theme than in this absorbing overview of power, sex, violence, and kindness among apes-and humans."-Booklist"Sklar adds just a touch of a smile to his sonorous voice, conveying friendliness, warmth, and humor."-AudioFile Magazine
