Sinopse

This not a travelogue of places, sights and sounds, hotels to stay or routes to take, it is in many ways a spiritual quest of being guided by a stranger in Singapore to travel to Nepal to meet, unknown to me at the time, 'The Little Buddha', Ossian MacLise.

I was the iconic, itinerant hippie traveler of the sixties and early seventies, working for a year or two then traveling for a year before reaching England and working until I had enough money to go again.

My first foray into travel was the great flower power hippie overland route from Australia to England. Traveling by bus, train or plane I slowly made my way through Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey then onto England before returning to Europe and home to Australia. Life on the road is exciting, exhausting and life changing, I recommend it for everyone before they settle into the world of marriage, children and a mortgage. The problem was I never settled and always remained the itinerant traveler, always looking for the next adventure.

General Grant and the Verdict of...

    Dr. Frank P. Varney

General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly? General Grant and the Verdict of History explores these issues.

Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant's relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising "Fighting Joe" Hooker; George H. Thomas, the commander who earned the sobriquet "Rock of Chickamauga"; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox.

Dr. Varney had studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans's star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Grant used official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, his memoirs, and the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize.

This book is a heart-stopping journey told in first person, which describes unusual courage and uncanny luck. It is the true story of a 13-year-old boy who lost everything during the Holocaust. He fought to live on in spite of ghettos, fatal line-ups, enslavement in work camps, and years of survival as a partisan in Polish forests.
From the cover: "His mother had to make a quick decision that no parent would ever want to make. Which of her children had the best chance to survive this calamity? Her son. Anschel, was the oldest and strongest. The two girls had to stay with her no matter what was coming."

Award-winning poet Kim Moore studied music and was a trumpet teacher for several years. What the Trumpet Taught Me is a collection of vivid and immediate snapshots, from first lessons to music college, and from teaching the trumpet in schools and conducting a brass band, through to playing in working men's clubs in a ten-piece soul band.
Meditative and often funny, these short prose pieces are always open to experience and clear-eyed about the vagaries of class-prejudice and the intricacies of gender in a predominantly male world.
The trumpet is the central character that we always return to as we are asked to consider the pivotal role of music in both an individual and social history.

The Hippocratic oath is sacred. Until it’s not. Human foibles and frailties can quickly grow and make the Doctor into a romantic hero, or a despised villain, or hopeless professional in the face of what is around him.

In this volume our protagonists are the people we look to for help and certainty when we are in distress and pain. Our authors place these characters in stories that are as relevant to our thoughts today as when they were first published.
