Summary

A collection of haunting lyricism that evokes the beauty and hardship of the rural South, by a revered American master of letters—the award-winning, bestselling author of the novels Serena, Something Rich and Strange, and Above the Waterfall.
In this incandescent, profound, and accessible collection, beloved and award-winning poet, novelist, and short-story writer Ron Rash vividly channels the rhythms of life in Appalachia, deftly capturing the panoply of individuals who are its heart and soul—men and women inured to misfortune and hard times yet defined by tremendous fortitude, resilience, and a fierce sense of community.
In precise, supple language that swerves from the stark to the luminous, Rash richly describes the splendor of the natural landscape and poignantly renders the lives of those dependent on its bounty—in cotton mills and tobacco fields, farmlands and forests. The haunting memories and shared histories of these people—their rituals and traditions—animate this land, and are celebrated in Rash’s crystalline, intensely imagined verse.
With an eye for the surprising and vivid detail, Ron Rash powerfully captures the sorrows and exaltations of this wondrous world he knows intimately. Illuminating and indelible, Poems demonstrates his rich talents and confirms his legacy as a standard-bearer for the literature of the American South.

J.M. Synge, at the suggestion of one of the founders of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, visited the Arran Islands to live and learn the speech of the native Irish. There, the speech and customs were such that a man who had the courage to murder his "old da", if he deserved it, could become a hero. From that idea comes this story that poetically immortalizes the Irish people, starring James Lancaster, Bairbre Dowling, and Sean McClory, all past members of the Abbey Theatre.Starring: James Lancaster as Christy Mahon, Bairbre Dowling as Pegeen Mike, Jeanette Nolan as The Widow Quinn, William Windom as Old Mahon, Sean McClory as Michael James Flaherty, Shay Duffin as Shawn Keogh, Marty Maguire as Jimmy Farrell, Linda Henning as Sara Tansey, Elizabeth Dennehy as Susan Brady, Elliott Reir as Philly Cullen, Fiona Dwyer as Nellie, Bernadette O'Neil as Honor, Bob Legionaire as The Town Crier, and CART's Announcer John Harlan.Directed and produced by Peggy Webber.

I learned the secret of serenity by waterboarding daffodils. My Buddha is landfill. My mantra choked from a bluebird’s neck. It’s ruthless, the pursuit of happiness. Eighteen seconds have elapsed.

This collection is a universe where minimalism and maximalism work in harmony. Ethics, economics, glamour and alternative physics arejust a few of the vehicles Besner uses in her jaundiced pursuit of knowledge and joy. At the collection’s core is a series of brilliantly illuminated poems patterned on a scientific study of synaesthesia and Fisher Price refrigerator magnets. Besner’s courageous comparisons and musicality provide the critical happiness we all need.

‘Besner’s imagination doesn’t appear to have an upper or outer limit … Reading her poems is a bad trip and a transformational experience.’

    – Ken Babstock

‘Besner is one of the funniest poets writing in this country.’

    – National Post

The Divine Comedy (Italian: Commedia, later christened "Divina" by Giovanni Boccaccio), written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321, is widely considered the central epic poem of Italian literature, the last great work of literature of the Middle Ages and the first great work of the Renaissance. A culmination of the medieval world-view of the afterlife, it establishes the Tuscan dialect in which it is written as the Italian standard, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. - The Divine Comedy is composed of three canticas (or "cantiche") — Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Paradise) — composed each of 33 cantos (or "canti"). The very first canto serves as an introduction to the poem and is generally not considered to be part of the first cantica, bringing the total number of cantos to 100. - The poet tells in the first person his travel through the three realms of the dead, lasting during the Easter Triduum in the spring of 1300.
