Sinopsis

For a relatively small nation, Scotland certainly hasn't been short of radicals. Over the centuries, the country has produced revolutionary and reforming ideas, ideals and behaviours that have changed the world we live in.
From football to philosophy, from scientists to soldiers, Scots have made a huge and disproportionate contribution to world transformation. Inventors and medics, rock stars and comedians have all played their part in making Scotland and the world very different. Peace campaigners and warriors sit side by side within these pages; poets and politicians rub shoulders.
Not all radicals can be successful and there are those whose dreams were never realised. But in these pages, one hundred and thirty-eight Scots, some known internationally, some unknown in their own street, find a home.

What happens when paradise stops distracting you and starts revealing you?
Ten Thousand Hours in Paradise: Tribulationscontinues Andrew’s true journey on the Big Island of Hawaii, picking up exactly where Volume 1 left off and turning inward, toward the most difficult terrain of all.
A routine hitchhiking ride introduces a new person into Andrew’s life and an invitation he can’t ignore: a ten-day silent Vipassana meditation retreat.
What begins as curiosity quickly becomes a radical experiment in awareness. In total silence, with no distractions and no stories to hide behind, he learns to observe his thoughts without attachment, confront buried trauma without narrative, and witness firsthand the impermanent nature of everything he thought he was.
As the days unfold, paradise takes on a new meaning. Old emotional patterns surface. Unrequited love reveals itself in a different light. And on his birthday, a message arrives from beyond the grave that feels impossible to explain and impossible to forget.
The island no longer offers escape, only reflection.
✨ Ten Thousand Hours in Paradise: Tribulations chronicles a deep inner transformation on Hawaii, through meditation, vulnerability, and radical self-inquiry. Luminous, honest, and immersive, Tribulations is for readers drawn to true stories of healing, consciousness, and the unsettling beauty of change.
Continue the journey today. Take the next step deeper into paradise.

    In the Mind of Stalin

On 1 October 1939, Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty and soon to be the UK’s wartime leader, described Russia as ‘a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. The same can certainly be said of Stalin. How can this paradox of a man, who on the one hand had once exhibited great tenderness and kindness to his daughter Svetlana, and on the other sent millions – including members of his own family - to their deaths, be explained?

It is impossible to quantify the total number of deaths attributable to the policies of Stalin, but the ‘Excess Mortality’ (i.e., deaths over and above what would normally have been expected during the period in question) gives an approximate figure in excess of 40 million.

However, this is only part of the story of the amount of misery inflicted by the Stalin regime through torture, deliberate starvation, neglect, separation from loved ones, cold and hypothermia (e.g. in the prisons of Siberia), which is unquantifiable and unimaginable.

Svetlana confessed that she ‘would never undertake to “explain” what motivated all my father’s actions, simply because I do not possess the psychological genius of [Russian novelist] Dostoevsky, who knew how to “penetrate” into another man’s soul and “examine it from within”’.

Based on the hit BBC 5Live podcast series, The Trillion Dollar Conman is an audacious tale of an international fraud that is stranger than fiction.

In 2009, Notts County FC were on the brink of bankruptcy when they were taken over by a mysterious company supposedly backed by the Bahraini royal family. The club was promised millions of pounds worth of investment and a list of marquee players, including Sol Campbell and Kasper Schmeichel were signed, in a recruitment drive led by former England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, who was appointed to take the club all the way to the Premier League.

However, within weeks, as the bills began to pile up, the dream came tumbling down as it transpired that the club, the players and the fans had been tricked by a convicted fraudster called Russell King.

The world's oldest professional football club found itself at the centre of one of the most outlandish frauds in sporting and world history, which spanned the globe from Nottingham to North Korea, involving fake sheikhs, fast cars, broken promises and a trail of destruction.

Jason Byrne is 17. He has his Leaving Cert under his belt but no idea what to do next. Who better to ask for advice than his dad, Paddy Byrne?
There's a (very) short stint studying accountancy (he was asked to leave); a FÁS course with juvenile prisoners to become a waiter (his wonky eye was not an advantage); and a job in a lighting warehouse (it ended with a collapsed lung). But no matter the problem, Paddy is always there with a whiskey, a smoke and a wise word: 'Sure, that's life, son. Just don't tell your mother.'
Follow Jason's hilarious journey to becoming one of Ireland's best-loved comedians in a laugh-out loud book that is a celebration of a generation, of life and of Jason's wonderful relationship with his dad, Paddy Byrne – the man who never gave a b*llix.

“Audiobook narrator Johnny Heller has a brisk, ardent manner, moving through events at a spirited trot, conveying the urgency and high stakes of Revere’s mission.”—The Washington PostTimed for the 250th anniversary of one of America’s most famous founding events: Paul Revere’s legendary ride, newly told with fresh research into little-known aspects of the story Americans have heard since childhood but hardly understoodOn April 18, 1775, a Boston-based silversmith, engraver, and anti-British political operative named Paul Revere set out on a borrowed horse to fulfill a dangerous but crucial mission: to alert American colonists of advancing British troops, which would seek to crush their nascent revolt.Revere was not the only rider that night, and indeed, he had completed at least 18 previous rides across New England and other colonies, disseminating intelligence about British movements. But this ride was like no other, and its consequences in the months and years to come—as the American Revolution morphed from isolated skirmishes to a full-fledged war—became one of our founding legends. In The Ride, Kostya Kennedy presents a dramatic new narrative of the events of April 18 and 19, 1775, informed by fresh primary and secondary source research into archives, family letters and diaries, contemporary accounts, and more. Kennedy reveals Revere’s ride to be more complex than it is usually portrayed—a loosely coordinated series of rides by numerous men, near-disaster, capture by British forces, and finally success. While Revere was central to the ride and its plotting, Kennedy reveals the other men (and, perhaps, a woman with information about the movement of British forces) who helped to set in motion the events that would lead to America’s independence.Thrillingly written in a dramatic, unstoppable narrative, The Ride retells an essential American story for a new generation of listeners.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.
