Sinopsis

In "Old Melbourne Memories," Rolf Boldrewood weaves a vivid tapestry of life in 19th-century Melbourne, capturing the essence of a burgeoning city through a series of intricately crafted vignettes. The book adopts a semi-autobiographical style, reflecting Boldrewood's own experiences during the gold rush era, and evokes the landscape, culture, and societal changes of that period. Through rich descriptions and a keen observational eye, the narrative immerses readers in the daily lives of its characters, blending nostalgia with a critique of the rapid urbanization and the moral quandaries it brings to the forefront. Rolf Boldrewood, a prominent Australian author whose real name was Thomas Alexander Browne, drew inspiration from both his own life as a goldfields commissioner and his surroundings as he navigated the complexities of a young, evolving nation. His diverse experiences as a pastoralist and public servant enriched his writings with authenticity and depth, making his portrayal of Melbourne not just a personal memoir but a significant historical document informing our understanding of Australian identity. "Old Melbourne Memories" is a compelling read for those interested in Australian history, literature, and the intricate interplay between personal memory and collective identity. Boldrewood's nuanced portrayal of his time invites reflection on the ways our past shapes the present, making this book an invaluable addition to any literary collection.

The first full reappraisal of one of Britain's great fighter aces, this book examines the truth behind Tuck's 1956 biography, Fly for Your Life. It looks at the evidence behind the myths, checks out some of the exaggerated stories and reveals the real Stanford Tuck. In January 1942 Bob Tuck was the top-scoring British fighter ace with an official score of twenty-nine enemy aircraft destroyed. During the Battle of Britain his legendary prowess grew and he was posted to command a leaderless and demoralized squadron, this time flying Hurricanes. He continued to prove he was an outstanding fighter ace, gaining the rare distinction of three DFCs and then the DSO for his leadership. He was shot down over France in January 1942. In January 1944 however, around twenty POWs, including Tuck, were purged to a new camp. Still determined to escape, Tuck and a Polish officer took a risky chance and made their way east to Russian forces and thence to England. This book reveals a more complex man than the one-dimensional hero of the previous biography. Post war, he became good friends with the Luftwaffe ace, Adolf Galland, and was a key advisor with him on the film Battle of Britain, and, often made many media appearances. His health suffered in later years from the impact of his war service and his imprisonment and he died aged seventy in 1987.

Women in Ancient Egypt held a unique and significant position within the broader social and cultural framework of their civilization. Unlike in many ancient societies, Egyptian women enjoyed a considerable amount of rights and freedoms, especially when compared to their contemporaries in other parts of the world. The role of women in Egyptian society was largely defined by a combination of legal rights, religious significance, and familial responsibilities, with many women being able to exercise substantial influence in both public and private spheres.
Socially, women in Ancient Egypt were often portrayed as equals to men, and their contributions to society were highly valued. While men generally dominated the spheres of politics, military, and high-ranking religious offices, women were not excluded from positions of authority, especially within the royal family and the religious hierarchy. For example, queens, priestesses, and high-ranking women could wield political power and influence in matters of state and governance. However, their roles were primarily centered around the family and domestic life. Marriage and motherhood were central to a woman’s identity, and women were expected to oversee the household and care for children.
In terms of legal rights, women in Ancient Egypt were granted many protections and privileges. They had the ability to own property, enter into contracts, and even initiate divorce if necessary. This level of autonomy was relatively rare in the ancient world, where women were often considered the property of their fathers or husbands. Egyptian women also had the right to inherit property, and they could pass on property to their children, ensuring that their lineage could maintain wealth and status. These legal rights enabled women to participate in economic transactions, manage estates, and even become wealthy landowners in some cases.

“That’s right…send another man money, then thank him for the opportunity. It feels good, doesn’t it? It feels natural.”
My life is spiraling out of control. I sent money to a guy on social media as an experiment, but it triggered something in my brain.
Each night after work, I sit in the dark while he “drains” me. My eyes glaze over as he siphons away the money I’ve worked so hard to save. Each time I hit send, I feel his hooks digging deeper into my mind.
We’ve agreed to meet in person. I’m scared—I’m worried he’ll bond me to him, pulling me into a universe I’ll never be able to escape.
But that’s exactly what I want. I need to commit to an alpha male.

    The City of The Sun

    Tommaso Campanella

The City of the Sun is a philosophical work by the Italian Dominican philosopher Tommaso Campanella. It is an important early utopian work. The work was written in Italian in 1602, shortly after Campanella's imprisonment for heresy and sedition. A Latin version was written in 1613–1614 and published in Frankfurt in 1623.
The book is presented as a dialogue between "a Grandmaster of the Knights Hospitaller and a Genoese Sea-Captain". Inspired by Plato's Republic and the description of Atlantis in Timaeus, it describes a theocratic society where goods, women and children are held in common. It also resembles the City of Adocentyn in the Picatrix, an Arabic grimoire of astrological magic. In the final part of the work, Campanella prophesies—in the veiled language of astrology—that the Spanish kings, in alliance with the Pope, are destined to be the instruments of a Divine Plan: the final victory of the True Faith and its diffusion in the whole world. While one could argue that Campanella was simply thinking of the conquest of the New World, it seems that this prophecy should be interpreted in the light of a work written shortly before The City of the Sun, The Monarchy in Spain, in which Campanella exposes his vision of a unified, peaceful world governed by a theocratic monarchy.
