Sinopsis

The story of surfing in Scotland is defined by people who dared to dream in spite of the cold, from Neva MacDonald-Haig and the coffin-lid surfers of Machrihanish, who first took to the waves off the west coast in the 1930s with a little help from a local undertaker, to Andy Bennetts and the pioneers of the 1960s, who discovered many of the nation's best breaks, to contemporary big wave surfer Ben Larg, a native of the tiny island of Tiree who now travels the world riding skyscraper-sized walls of water for a living.
Scotland is also home to a rich and distinctive surfing culture, with its own surfboard shapers, surf instructors, surf filmmakers, surf photographers and surf fashion brands, not to mention surf-inspired artists and musicians. Professional contests held at some of Scotland's best waves have drawn visits from surfing world champions including Tom Curren, Sunny Garcia and John John Florence, and in recent years Scotland's own surfers have begun to make their presence felt on the competitive stage, with the Scottish surf team featuring at the World Surfing Games and at Eurosurf after finally gaining official recognition in 2014.
The View From the Shoulder draws together 20 years of surf journalism from the pages of The Scotsman newspaper, together with fresh context, to create a portrait of a wave-riding community like no other.

A refreshing memoir of battles and self-belief from one of the NHL's most revered enforcers

Shawn Thornton was an unlikely NHL success, to say the least. The Oshawa, Ontario, native was picked late in the OHL and later thought he was being pranked when the Toronto Maple Leafs called him to say he'd been selected in the seventh round of the 1997 NHL draft.

After years spent working and maturing in the AHL, Thornton would go on to play fourteen seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, and Florida Panthers, winning two Stanley Cups along the way.

For the first time, in this candid memoir, Thornton opens up about his life in hockey and beyond, from his early days as an unrated prospect to the leadership lessons he learned in the minors, from the most difficult on-ice brawls to the ecstasy of reaching the sport's most celestial heights.

Fans will not want to miss this story of perseverance and finding one's own path.

SI golf writer and author of Tiger & Phil, Bob Harig's Tiger v. Jack, an examination of the greatest argument in golf—who was better—exploring the records, rivalries, statistics, and context of their illustrious careers, including the intangibles that made them both icons. When Jack Nicklaus stunningly won the 1986 Masters for his 18th major championship victory, it was a reminder of the greatness of a golfer who had done so much. The major title – six years after his last – brought into focus again the dominance of his career. At the time, nobody was close to him in major wins, and the idea of anyone getting within miles of Nicklaus’ major record, let alone match or overtake him, seemed, frankly, preposterous. And yet, there was a kid who was just 10 years old when Nicklaus won that last major. Tiger Woods was already thinking about Jack. He would put his accomplishments on a wall by age and try to beat those feats. Eventually, he put Nicklaus’ 18 major titles in his sights, and for the better part of a decade was on pace to match or exceed the record, a remarkable thought itself. The fact that he came up short doesn’t diminish the chase. In Tiger v. Jack, Bob Harig explores and compares the two legends in a lively examination of the greatest argument in golf—who was better, Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods—exploring the records, rivalries, statistics, and context of their illustrious careers, including the intangibles that made them both icons. They both had their moments of brilliance and dominance. What we’ve seen from Nicklaus and Woods is likely to never be duplicated, all the more reason to celebrate it.
