Sinopsis

A Chinese proverb that reminds us of this book reads: "The strongest and most luxuriant tree lives from what it has underneath." Thus, Cuban culture has nourishing sources that must be fully known in order to enjoy and understand what we are. Generally, the analyses of the nation's profile pay attention to the Hispanic and African components, and the important role of the Chinese channel in our culture is often overlooked. The Chinese Trace in Cuban Literature is, without a doubt, the most notable effort so far to reveal this trace in our literature, from the 19th century to today, and in different literary genres and discursive types; as its author maintains: "From the creation of novel characters designed within a reproductive realism, the assumption of signs typical of Chinese culture and thought for the shaping of the text, the treatment of historical issueseither in the evolutionary outline of a lineage or in the investigation of significant events, the incursion into this problem from generic modalities or literary renovation proposals, to the aesthetic feat of the transcoding of forms and meanings from Chinese to our language and culture".

One of the best known of the six nations is the Seneca, and arguably the most famous Seneca chief was Ely Samuel Parker. Over the course of his life, he was a Seneca chief, a civil engineer, a close friend and adjutant to General Ulysses S. Grant, an advocate for the Indian peoples, and the first Native American Commissioner of the Department of Indian Affairs. His marriage to a much younger socialite scandalized Washington, and he made a fortune on Wall Street and lost it all. He ended his life in genteel poverty, working for nearly 20 years in an obscure position for the New York City Police Department. Parker was a largely self-taught engineer, who worked on various canal projects, and was hired by the Department of the Treasury to supervise the construction of several buildings in Galena, Illinois, where he met a shy salesclerk named Ulysses S. Grant. At the age of 18, he dined with President Polk, later talked with President Lincoln, and had the commanding general of the U.S. Army as the best man at his wedding.
Stand Watie’s life connects the traditional Cherokee homeland in Tennessee and Georgia, the fight within the tribe over leaving for the West or staying on their homeland and trying to resist, and the Trail of Tears. At the same time, his life also includes the ongoing split between mixed-blood and full-blood Cherokee in the Cherokee Nation, and the chaos of Indian Territory during the Civil War. Like the country as a whole, the Cherokee Nation was split over the question of slavery, and with an estimated 100 slaves owned, Watie was the biggest native slaveholder in the region. At the start of the war, Watie was commissioned as a colonel in Confederate service and later as a brigadier general. His 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles Regiment fought more engagements than any other Confederate unit west of the Mississippi River. As a result, Watie is perhaps the most famous figure of a widely overlooked aspect of the Civil War.

A meditation on southwestern terrains, intergenerational queer dynamics, and surveilled brown artists that crosses physical and conceptual borders.

Part butch memoir, part ekphrastic travel diary, part queer family tree, Raquel Gutiérrez’s debut essay collection, Brown Neon, gleans insight from the sediment of land and relationships. For Gutiérrez, terrain is essential to understanding that no story, no matter how personal, is separate from the space where it unfolds.

Whether contemplating the value of adobe as both vernacular architecture and commodified art object, highlighting the feminist wounding and transphobic apparitions haunting the multigenerational lesbian social fabric, or recalling a failed romance, Gutiérrez traverses complex questions of gender, class, identity,
and citizenship with curiosity and nuance.

Wired Our Own Way is the first anthology of personal essays written by autistic Irish adults.
2025 figures show that one in twenty Irish schoolchildren are now identified as autistic, and society's understanding of neurodiversity is evolving rapidly. As awareness grows, many adults are also discovering this aspect of themselves, finding greater clarity and self-compassion in the process.
This bestselling anthology explores the profound impact of receiving a diagnosis and highlights the wide range of experiences within the neurodivergent community in Ireland. Through deeply personal and insightful essays, the contributors reveal the many ways this identity shapes their lives – proving there is no single way of being autistic.
From meltdowns to mental health, from early diagnoses to late-in-life revelations, and from cultural stereotypes to workplace challenges, this collection offers a rich, multifaceted perspective on life beyond the neurotypical lens. A celebration of individuality, resilience, and self-discovery, it shines a light on voices that deserve to be heard.
