Sinopsis

Enter the imaginative world of the four-year-old Sapphire twins. Jackson and Jillian love pretending and love doing everything all by themselves. Tonight’s task is tooth-brushing. But when Annie the guinea pig enters the scene, there is a brush with disaster. Older sister and brother, Alicia and Mason, will help the twins achieve a milestone of independence. "Jackson and Jillian" is written for read-aloud and for early readers. An art activity, and interactive questions to promote memory recall and emotional intelligence are included. ABOUT THE THREE BOOK SERIES: I was in my classroom when a student asked, “I wonder what my sister is doing right now?” The student’s question made me think about a child’s emerging concept of time: that of being aware of life happening elsewhere, outside of the child’s own experience. Each book in the Sapphire Family Series is told from a different point of view: that of the twins, in "Jackson and Jillian," their older sister, Alicia in "Alicia and Annie," and big brother, Mason in "Mason and Invincible Igor." All three books take place during the same period of time, early evening. Although the books can stand alone, read together they offer a three-dimensional exploration of sibling interactions and family dynamics. Reading a story from different points of view is a first step in thinking beyond oneself. My intention is that the Sapphire Family Series will offer children compelling characters with whom they can identify and grow, and present positive, realistic family dynamics that will delight them.

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? The US Supreme Court takes on the case in this juicy history book for kids ages 7 to 10.

In the late 1800s, American produce king John Nix just wanted to sell tomatoes. But when import taxes on popular vegetables impacted his profits, he knew he had to remedy the situation. Nix set out to prove that tomatoes, which have seeds and grow on vines, were clearly fruits. That was the claim Nix argued all the way to the US Supreme Court. With Nix on Team Fruit, and the US government on Team Vegetable, both sides slung definition after definition in an epic, legal food fight. This little-known agriculturally based story from American history will fascinate young readers and encourage them to take a stand and defend their opinions.

★ "The Supreme Court battle over the definition of a tomato plays out in a humorous children's […] book which is most certainly guilty of being a remarkable read."—Shelf Awareness, starred review
