Sinopse

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Robert William Chambers, a successful, influential and chameleonic writer

American writer Robert W. Chambers is best known for his book “The King in Yellow,” a collection of short stories mostly of the macabre horror variety. His book “In Search of the Unknown,” published in 1904, shows a more light hearted side to Chambers. This work is ostensibly a novel, but it reads more like a collection of short stories that have been cobbled together into one continuous narrative. They are linked by a frame narrative (the protagonist is sent to help secure an odd creature) and similar structure (the protagonist falls in love and fails to win the heart of the source of his infatuation).

Chambers' early novel explores the mysteries of the unknown. Throughout the stories, the book's protagonist and narrator, Mr. Gilland, will go on the hunt for strange animals and the supernatural.

“In Search of the Unknown” is science fiction in the most literal sense, in that it’s not about speculative visions of outer space or the future, but rather about a scientist and the practice of science.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

The Edwardian era lasted under a decade at the turn of the 1900’s. Victoria was dead but everything else strode on. The Nation’s authors added to their number with new talents who attempted new ways of re-interpreting the Ghost Story. Benson, Pain and all the others found a ready audience for these sharp-edged gems and their malevolent ways.

Within the mysterious confines of Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood, Prudence Osgood, 45, queer AF, tormented by chronic pain, opioid addiction, and a tempestuous relationship with alcohol, captains The Spectral Inspectors—an ensemble of ghost hunters, each wrestling with their inner ghosts. In Osgood as She Gets, the third installment of The Spectral Inspector series, a sinister phenomenon known as The Graveyard Game emerges, drawing in fearless teenagers who dare to confront their own mortality by gazing into the hooded statue's eyes. As suicides surge, a chilling question arises: Is this disturbing game to blame, or does it have a connection to the elusive North Side Slasher? With time running out, The Spectral Inspectors must unravel the mystery that threatens their beloved city.
Osgood as She Gets delves deep into themes of regret, survivor's guilt, the relentless fight for survival, and the haunting art of letting go. With a tone that balances moments of light-heartedness and warmth with periods of profound introspection and spine-tingling terror, this novel invites you to join Osgood, Audrey, and Zack as they navigate the twisted realms of the supernatural. Can they unearth the truth before the shadows swallow them whole?
Reviewers are calling Osgood as She Gets "A trippy, cosmical joyride grappling with terror, pain, guilt, and bad decisions," "An engaging and grisly caper," "deeply chilling, yet profoundly human," and "A haunting, dream-like urban fantasy that stings and satisfies like a bitter-sweet shot of whiskey," and main character Prudence Osgood "a protagonist for the ages: bold, brash and absolutely captivating," "a lovable disaster," and "the bad habit you didn't know you needed." They say of writer Beckett that he "writes with the accessibility and charm of Stephen King, but with the queer knowledge and language to appeal to an often-ignored audience."

    The Ravens
A flock of ravens floats upon the air over their prey,
Like a looming black storm cloud of gloom,
In the later hours of the death of the day,
They fight each other for room,
In the melee, one is injured it falls,
Blood and gore fill the air,
The air is filled with their dire calls,
Little did the observers of this carnage care,
To them, it was merely a display of the nature of the raven,
    Upon the hour they fled,
They were neither crazed nor craven,
    They were happy and well-fed.
