  Montesquieu, a French philosopher of the Enlightenment, is best known for his seminal work The Spirit of Laws (De l’esprit des lois), published in 1748. His insights into the relationship between law, society, and government laid the foundations for modern political science and deeply influenced subsequent political thought, particularly in the development of constitutional design and theory. Montesquieu’s work was groundbreaking, challenging prevailing ideas about governance, liberty, and the rule of law, offering a complex framework that would shape political thought for centuries. 
  Born in 1689, Montesquieu came from a noble family and was educated in law. His early career included service as a magistrate, which exposed him to the workings of the legal system and provided firsthand experience with the exercise of power. This practical knowledge informed his later philosophical work, as he sought to understand the connections between law and society, as well as the impact of political structures on individual liberty. 
  In The Spirit of Laws, Montesquieu examined a wide variety of political systems, including republics, monarchies, and despotisms, and their corresponding legal frameworks. His most famous contribution to political thought was his theory of the separation of powers, in which he argued that to prevent tyranny, government power should be divided into distinct branches—executive, legislative, and judicial—each with separate functions and the ability to check the other branches. This framework has become a central tenet of modern democratic systems, including the U.S. Constitution.

  Wovoka: The Life and Legacy of...

  Wovoka (1867-1932), the Ghost Dance Prophet, was a member of the Walker River band of Paiutes, in western Nevada. The Walker River Reservation was established in 1859 and was Wokova’s home off and on for years. Wovoka was also known as Jack Wilson, a name he acquired while he was, for some years, employed on the David Wilson family ranch in the Mason Valley. At that time in Nevada, Indians not living on a reservation often lived on a ranch. Wovoka was exposed to the pious Wilson family’s daily Bible readings, and that may have helped shape his own beliefs. 
  His father was a traditional medicine man, himself a devotee of an earlier prophet. In 1889, Wovoka followed his father in also becoming a medicine man. The year, Wovoka had a series of visions that led to what is sometimes called the Ghost Dance religion, which spread like wildfire across much of the West in 1889 and 1890. 
  Wovoka’s 1889 visions grew into a new religion that gripped the hopes and imaginations of dozens of tribal groups, and it eventually extended over much of the West. It was a kind of antidote for defeat and cultural dislocation. The Lakota Sioux in particular were so caught up in the Ghost Dance and their adaptation of Wovoka’s revelations that they remain strongly associated with the Ghost Dance more than a century later.

  The US media has been tainted with Russian disinformation, but the more significant threat is how the Right has embraced the Russian model of the news media as a vehicle for propaganda. This could not have happened without Donald Trump, who has been aided and abetted by politicians and news outlets that favor persuasion over information. From his inauguration onwards, Trump has shown allegiance to the Kremlin propaganda playbook—he consistently denies reality, amplifies lies, vilifies the free media, and broadcasts disinformation. 
   
   
   
  Seeing Red breaks new ground in investigating the scope of Russian disinformation, arguing that key politicians and media outlets in the United States have facilitated the dissemination of Russian propaganda. From the 2020 elections to the Capitol Insurrection to the war in Ukraine, Sarah Oates and Gordon Neil Ramsay examine the penetration of key Kremlin strategic narratives that attempt to project Russian power, blame NATO for Russian aggression, and attack democracy via the US news. Despite knowledge of the risk and resourceful work on tracking down Russian propaganda in the United States, the problem of foreign disinformation continues to this day. As Oates and Ramsay argue, this is in part due to exploitation of the American tradition of free speech and the open nature of the US media system.

  The Rosetta Stone - Key to...

  The discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 was a momentous event in the history of archaeology and linguistics. The stone, a large slab of granodiorite, was found by a French soldier named Pierre-François Bouchard during Napoleon Bonaparte’s military campaign in Egypt. While working near the town of Rashid (or Rosetta), Bouchard uncovered the stone, which contained an inscription in three different scripts: Ancient Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and Demotic. At the time, Egypt was under French control, and the discovery was initially made by a team of French engineers working on fortifications. 
  The significance of the stone would not be immediately apparent, as the study of hieroglyphs had long been a mystery to scholars. Despite attempts by earlier scholars, no one had yet succeeded in translating the ancient Egyptian script, leaving a vast portion of Egypt’s history locked away. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone, however, offered a potential breakthrough due to its trilingual inscription, which allowed for comparison between the known Greek text and the two unknown Egyptian scripts. 
  The stone’s inscription itself was a royal decree issued in 196 BCE by the Egyptian priests in honor of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes. It celebrated his reign and the various accomplishments he had achieved, including his efforts to maintain peace and the prosperity of Egypt. The decree was written in three scripts to ensure it would be understood by various segments of society—the Greek script for the Greek-speaking rulers and officials, the Demotic script for the common Egyptian people, and the hieroglyphic script for the priests and religious authorities.

  Born in Middlesex, he read history before graduating in 1969. Bill ran his own independent press and published political pamphlets and essays on the arts and poetry. After gaining a PhD in Old English he fled London and settled in Seaham where he embraced the northern way of life.
  'He was also a scholar of Old English and dialect who know how to make his work accessible. Private and uncompetitive, he was at least these things: poet, archivist, scholar, translator, prison-rights campaigner, pianist, historian, curator, performer, editor, short-story writer, essayist, teacher, book-maker and lyricist… The Saturday before he died, Bill discharged himself from hospital to host the Dialect Day at the Morden Tower in Newcastle upon Tyne. He died as he lived: cataloguing, awarding Best Dialect prizes, opera on his radio, the poetry paramount.' Obituary, The Independent, 20 September 2007.
