  The Tragedy of King Lear

  King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It tells the tale of a king who bequeaths his power and land to two of his three daughters, after they declare their love for him in an extremely fawning and obsequious manner. His third daughter gets nothing, because she will not flatter him as her sisters had done. When he feels disrespected by the two daughters who now have his wealth and power, he becomes furious to the point of madness. He eventually becomes tenderly reconciled to his third daughter, just before tragedy strikes her and then the king.
  Derived from the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king, the play has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures, with the title role coveted by many of the world's most accomplished actors. 
  The first attribution to Shakespeare of this play, originally drafted in 1605 or 1606 at the latest with its first known performance on St. Stephen's Day in 1606, was a 1608 publication in a quarto of uncertain provenance, in which the play is listed as a history; it may be an early draft or simply reflect the first performance text. The Tragedy of King Lear, a revised version that is better tailored for performance, was included in the 1623 First Folio. Modern editors usually conflate the two, though some insist that each version has its own individual integrity that should be preserved.

  Produced in 458 BC, Aeschylus' Choephori is the second play in the Oresteian trilogy. The bloodshed begun in the first play with the murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra is here continued when Agamemnon's son Orestes avenges his father's death by killing Clytemnestra. It is not until the third and final play, Eumenides, that peace is restored to the family of the Atreidae. The introduction discusses the pre-Aeschylean 'Orestes' tradition in literature and art, as well as the place of Choephori within the Oresteia, its imagery and dramatic structure, the questions of staging the play, and the manuscript tradition.

  The story takes place during the day in the market square. Two ordinary people walking along it, the treasurer Pocheshikhin and the correspondent of "Son of the Fatherland" Optimov, drew attention to a flock of starlings flying past. The flock sat down in the garden of the archpriest's father. During the discussion about where the flock finally sat down, in the garden of the father of the archpriest or the father of the deacon Vratoadov, passers-by began to gather around them: three old pilgrims, the father himself, Archpriest Vosmistishiev, deacon Evstigney, local vacationers, clerks.
  People began to worry whether there was a fire somewhere. Gradually a crowd gathered. They called the mayor Akim Danilych, who began to disperse the crowd. Firefighters appeared and came without water or equipment. During the excitement of the gathered crowd, a new organ received from Moscow began to sound in a nearby tavern. Hearing the organ, the crowd flocked to the tavern.
  In the evening, Akim Danilych, at the grocery store, wrote a letter about this event, in which he thanked "with tears the One who did not allow bloodshed."
