The Māori language version of the story evolved from a theatrical puppet show by TORO PIKOPIKO PUPPETS, that premiered at TE ANA MĀORI ROCK-ART CENTRE in 2017 called TE REREKA – THE FLIGHT. This rock-art puppet musical was adapted as an on-line interactive e-Audiobook for the Ministry of Education in 2018, and has now been formatted as a 70 minute, 6-chapter audiobook i te reo Kāi Tahu, my tribal dialect. The story is about Pourakahua, who is transformed into a spirit bird that flies to Aotearoa, New Zealand in search of her own kind. In my interpretation, she flies up the Ōpihi river, meeting a host of colourful creatures living in caves and limestone rock shelters, pursued by a bevy of bird-hunters. TE REREKA WAIRUA O POURAKAHUA is informed and inspired by the ancient rock-art from the South Canterbury region. To access the bi-lingual pictorial manuscript of this audio-book and other promotional material go to: www.maorirockartpuppets.com

'A nation that devours another will one day devour itself.'
Set when the Great Devouring comes home, England & Son is a kaleidoscopic odyssey, where disaster capitalism, empire, Thatcherite politics, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.
With some deep, dark laughs – and some deep, dark love – England & Son is a one-man play by Ed Edwards, first performed by the celebrated political comedian Mark Thomas.
It was first produced by HOME Manchester and Tin Cat Entertainment, and premiered in Paines Plough's Roundabout during the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, directed by Cressida Brown, where it won a Fringe First Award.
This edition also features an illuminating essay by the author, 'Writing the End of Empire'.
'A triumph… Ed Edwards' play has a terrifying force as it charts the story of a homeless man… it unfolds in fragmentary snapshots, kaleidoscopic images that build a picture in shards… The play's observations are fierce and sharp; its empathy, profound and moving' - WhatsOnStage
'A funny and ferocious telling of a lost childhood that frames the story of a juvenile offender through the lens of colonialism… powerful and moving' - Guardian
'Tremendous energy and real pathos' - The Stage

Who has not tried to write a poem? The poetic form of words seems to be rather easy. In its basic form, which we learn as children, the rhyming couplet is, in a child’s written and spoken words, pure joy - success! In the hands of a Shakespeare it is magnificent with a reach and understanding that the rest of us enjoy but are far from even attempting.

As we listen to various poetic forms, schools and movements we can only react with wonder at how these innocent words are assembled to create symphonies of ideas, wonder and revelation. The emotions they seek to invoke can be anything from happiness to sadness, from love to revulsion.

Arnold, Stevens, Keats, Akhmatova, Browning, Herrick, Hood, Killigrew are but a few of the roll-call of wordsmiths who with mere words create ravenous beauty that reveals tender lines and sensitive verse on how and why they are who they are.

From the award-winning poet behind Owl of Minerva, a collection of poems exploring themes of faith, memory, and meaning. His arresting ninth collection of poems, Eric Pankey’s Trace locates itself at a threshold between faith and doubt—between the visible and the invisible, the say-able and the ineffable, the physical and the metaphysical. Also a map of the poet’s journey into a deep depression, these poems confront one man’s struggle to overcome depression’s smothering weight and presence. And with remarkable clarity and complexity, Trace charts the poet’s attempt to be inspired, to breathe again, to give breath and life to words. Ever solemn, ever existential, Pankey’s poems find us at our most vulnerable, the moment when we as humans—believers and nonbelievers alike—must ultimately pause to question the uncertain fate of our souls. “Pankey’s language is beautiful and spare and he constantly surprises with profound lines. Pankey’s built a name for himself, and considering the quality of the poems in this collection, it’s no surprise.”—C. L. Bledsoe, Coal Hill Review  “Pankey’s ninth collection follows the poet into the hushed “gray dawn” of depression as he searches, often in vain, for God, and for faith in nature and himself…. It’s hard to deny the conflict that Pankey explores honestly and powerfully in these new poems.”—Publishers Weekly
