Robert Barr was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 16th September 1849. Five years later the family emigrated to a farm near Muirkirk in Upper Canada.
His early years were uneventful as the family settled into their new lives and Barr began his education.
A career path as a teacher opened up for him and, by 1874, he had been appointed as headmaster at the Central School at Windsor. Concurrently he also wrote travel and humourous articles for magazines. Within two years their success in the regional periodicals encouraged him to change careers to become a reporter and columnist.
In August 1876, at age 27, he married Eva Bennett and they began a family.
A half decade later he was the exchange editor of the ‘Free Press’ but decided to relocate to London to establish an English edition and to write fiction, which both met with much success.
Over the years he was a prolific writer and in 1892, along with Jerome K Jerome, he established ‘The Idler’ magazine and, just after the turn of the century, became its sole proprietor.
Although a number of his crime novels and short stories are parodies on Sherlock Holmes and other best-selling detectives of the time, he also wrote short stories across a whole range of subjects and genres usually with intriguing ideas and many laced with wit and humour.
Robert Barr died at his home in Woldingham, Surrey of heart disease on the 21st October 1912. He was 63.

Fishing With Tardelli - A Memoir...

A literary meditation on memory, time, love, and loss

Fishing With Tardelli contemplates the relations among four parents — mother, father, stepfather, and a Brazilian fishing companion — and the author. Over marriages and remarriages, fathers and mothers become stepfathers and stepmothers, and brothers gain and lose stepbrothers and half-brothers, sisters and half-sisters across two continents. The various homes become part of Besner’s internal geography; memory, dream, story, fable become permeable layers folded over bald facts baldly stated.

Beginning with an older man’s recollections of himself as a young teenager fishing with Tardelli in the bay in Rio de Janeiro, the memoir reflects on time lost and time regained. The narration ranges across the mid-’40s in Montreal, where two couples marry, divorce, and remarry in a new configuration; proceeds to Rio de Janeiro in the mid-’50s, when one of these newly formed families emigrates; and returns to Montreal in the late ’60s and early ’70s. After a 50-year interlude, Besner returns from Western Canada to the pandemic moment in Toronto.

This is a book about my faith journey from a young adult to my senior years. Being a survivor of COVID, I knew the LORD still had a purpose for my life. I listened to the voice in my heart and knew I needed to write this book as an encouragement to others. Events happen in life that can cause us to see ourselves as victims or survivors. I choose using my Faith "hat" to be a survivor; an overcomer in all things. You will read about my 60 day hospital stay and 4 month home health journey and how my identified "hats" brought me through it all. My COVID survival is a miracle from GOD. Identify your "hats" so the road in front of you can be paved; and a way made for you by HIM. May you always be an overcomer. After 40 years of teaching, I started living my retired life in the country home that my husband and I designed together. My faith journey spans several decades and I have worn many "hats" during my life. I have tied them securely and held them in place with my Faith "hat" to face many a trial and tribulation both emotionally and physically. I have experienced divorce 3 times, miscarriage twice, sexual assault, as well as having 2 beautiful children, enjoying relationships with siblings, experiencing grandchildren, and finally a soulmate and loving husband. I have learned to listen to the small voice in my heart and follow the LORD's leading. I am a modern day walking talking miracle.
