Sinopsis

In "The Byzantine Achievement," Robert Byron presents a compelling exploration of the intricate tapestry of Byzantine civilization, melding acute historical analysis with vivid, almost poetic prose. Byron's literary style oscillates between erudite and engaging, offering readers both scholarly insights and a vivid sense of place. Contextually, the book emerges during a period of renewed interest in Byzantine studies, as scholars sought to illuminate this often-overlooked civilization's contributions to art, architecture, and governance, making it a significant addition to the rich canon of 20th-century historical literature. Robert Byron, an esteemed travel writer and art historian, possessed a deep fascination with the cultural legacies of ancient civilizations, which greatly influenced his perspectives. His extensive travels through the Mediterranean and his previous works imbued him with a unique appreciation for the architectural and artistic achievements that characterized Byzantine society. Byron's passion for visual aesthetics, paired with his insight into the socio-political complexities of the era, culminated in this substantial homage to Byzantine culture. For those intrigued by the intersections of art, history, and culture, "The Byzantine Achievement" serves as an essential resource. Readers will find in Byron's narrative not only a profound understanding of a once-mighty empire but also an invitation to appreciate the enduring beauty and influence of Byzantine art and thought on contemporary civilization.

Shame is a notoriously unpleasant emotion that almost all of us have experienced at least once in our lifetimes. Almost everyone knows what the feeling of shame is like. However, we are reluctant to disclose our shameful experiences. It is often mentioned that shame is a taboo subject. Ironically, we are ashamed of our shame. It seems much easier to say ‚I am angry/sad/nervous? than to say ‚I am sorry.” Rather than finding it liberating, there is an assumption that talking about shame is demeaning or a sign of weakness. Therefore, until recently, there has been a shortage of research, understanding, and knowledge about shame to the extent that shame and similar emotions, such as guilt, are used interchangeably in the literature. Since shame appears present in a wide variety of psychological disorders and is associated with mental health problems such as depression, social phobia, and eating disorders, it is necessary to extend our knowledge in this area and become well-equipped to deal with it their shame. The current shame theorists suggest shame is one of the so-called self-conscious emotions because it mainly involves evaluating the self. A scandal is believed to be an incapacitating emotion accompanied by the feeling of being small, inferior, and shrinking. The self, as a whole, is devalued and considered to be inadequate, incompetent, and worthless. Shame might also involve being exposed, condemned, and ridiculed.Unlike basic emotions, shame does not seem to have distinctive universal facial expressions. It is not experienced similarly in different cultures. Emotions such as shame, pride, guilt, embarrassment, envy, empathy, and jealousy are associated with a sense of self and self-awareness; hence, they belong to a family of self-conscious emotions. To experience shame, individuals need the ability to form self-representations, internalize external values, and compare and evaluate themselves. Therefore, guilt is not experienced in species with lower cognitiv

    The Plague Years - A Doctor’s...

In 1992, Dr. Ross A. Slotten signed more death certificates in Chicago—and, by inference, the state of Illinois—than anyone else. As a family physician, he was trained to care for patients from birth to death, but when he completed his residency in 1984, he had no idea that many of his future patients would be cut down in the prime of their lives. Among those patients were friends, colleagues, and lovers, shunned by most of the medical community because they were gay and HIV positive. Slotten wasn’t an infectious disease specialist, but because of his unique position as both a gay man and a young physician, he became an unlikely pioneer, swept up in one of the worst epidemics in modern history.

Plague Years is an unprecedented first-person account of that epidemic, spanning not just the city of Chicago but four continents as well. Slotten provides an intimate yet comprehensive view of the disease’s spread alongside heartfelt portraits of his patients and his own conflicted feelings as a medical professional, drawn from more than thirty years of personal notebooks. In telling the story of someone who was as much a potential patient as a doctor, Plague Years sheds light on the darkest hours in the history of the LGBT community in ways that no previous medical memoir has.

With much of the world having been in a precipitous meltdown over the past couple of decades and continuing to hit a new low with each passing year with no end in sight, one wonders whether this is the new normal or whether the ongoing madness will eventually end so as to usher in a brighter dawn.
Fortunately, Mother Nature has blessed us with a hitherto unknown phenomenon dubbed the “oqual cycle” that helps us to revitalize our society after we have gone astray as is the case across much of the globe today—coined from Latin, the adjective "oqual" literally means "84-year".
In a manner that the daily cycle lends us an indispensable mechanism for recharging our batteries during the night after a hectic day at work, the oqual cycle is equally necessary to reboot our society after it becomes corrupted and choppy over what appears to be a period of 84 years on average.
Since our childhood, we have not only heard ad nauseam the cliché that history is cyclical but it has also been shoved down our throat time and again.
Well, our gurus and mentors were truly onto something in that we now know that history is in fact oquacyclical—it repeats exactly 84 years on average courtesy of the unavoidable spell of oqual cycle on our precarious civilization.
In short, the oqual cycle serves as a model par excellence for making sense of the ongoing sociopolitical trials-and-tribulations of our own times that in no small part elicit a wistful yearning for the rather sweet memories of our recent past from the second half of the 20th century.
Why has humanity lost its moral compass today?
Why are our leaders clueless about how to change course?
How will the ongoing madness around the globe end?
Are we teetering on the brink of a nuclear armageddon?
When will the good old days return?
The oqual cycle has you covered from every angle.
