Sinopsis

Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess" serves as a quintessential example of dramatic monologue, encapsulating the poet's mastery of characterization and psychological depth. Set in Renaissance Italy, this chilling narrative unfolds through the voice of a Duke as he unveils a portrait of his deceased wife. The interplay of power, jealousy, and the male gaze is deftly crafted, with Browning's intricate use of enjambment and vivid imagery creating a haunting yet compelling portrait of a man who equates affection with possession. The poem not only engages with historical context but also probes the darker aspects of human nature, encapsulating the tension between art and human emotion amidst an elite social backdrop. Browning, an influential figure of the Victorian era, drew upon his fascination with the dramatic, the psychological, and the moral complexities of individuals. His experiences in Italy and his deep interest in character-driven narratives significantly influenced "My Last Duchess." Drawing from historical accounts and Renaissance art, Browning skillfully channels the voice of the Duke, reflecting the era's themes of power dynamics and emotional manipulation. This masterpiece is highly recommended for those interested in poetic narrative and character exploration. Students of literature, poetry enthusiasts, and anyone intrigued by the intricate dance of love, power, and tragedy will find Browning's work both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

Since childhood, Janice Whyne has been a words person, writing prose-filled Christmas cards, songs and poetry. She sees poetry as a means of self-expression. A conduit and a safe space for our emotions, feelings and lived experiences. She's a Londoner by birthplace, a Jamaican by birthright, and also regards Indonesia as another homeland.
In Conversation is a personal milestone in Janice's journey of rediscovering her creative self. Along the way, she's ventured into the world of open mics, spoken word and poetry slams; winning 1st runner-up at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival Poetry Slam 2019 & 2022.
The poems in In Conversation began their lives with a word(s) exchanged in conversation or that captured her attention in something she was listening to or viewing. She regards them as articulations of the said and unsaid; with the poetic voice in them not always hers, but rather an expression of the voice(s) of others.
Readers have described it as unapologetic, raw, poignant, vulnerable and brave: a journey.
"It speaks of someone that feels and loves much for this world, the wonderful imperfect people in it, and the injustices that go on."
Themes of life, loss, love, protest and more are awaiting all who choose to engage in conversation with these poems.

    'Here I am, weightless /
    now take me home'
So That You Know is the quintessential Mani Rao collection. These are poems that hold the playful exuberance of youth and the dazzling insight of age; that are at times measured, at times extravagant. What unites them is their commitment to mining deep into the recesses of the heart and offering moments of ecstatic revelation. 'Every morning you would breathe me fly,' says the poet, and one can feel the words take wing.
Mani Rao's work has, over the years, acquired a reputation for battering against the doors of poetic convention, experimenting with form and language, and untethering images so they run fast and thick. Part visual, part text, So That You Know stands testimony to the mischief and anarchy of her poetry.
If Mani Rao's language has been described as 'molten lava', here is the book that reminds you why. Each stanza-searing, incandescent, unstoppable.

"Home Burial" is a poem about a man and woman whose baby has died. It tells of the burial, how the parents react to this death, particularly their lack of communication.
This piece is especially poignant given that Frost's son Elliot died at age 4, his daughter Elinor Bettina died when she was a few days old, his wife experienced a miscarriage, two of his daughters suffered mental breakdowns and died, and his son Carol committed suicide.
    A Blackstone Audio production.
