Sinopsis

Following the success of Poetry Out Loud (now in its eighth printing), an affectionate celebration of the declaimed poem, Love Poetry Out Loud now turns to the choppier waters of affection itself. From Hello, I Love You to Pleasures of the Flesh to Loves Me Not, this collection of one hundred poems shouts out life’s grand passion with the help of the voices of poets old and new. Rubin’s informed, irreverent style skillfully reveals the humor, beauty, variety, tradition, and passion of love poetry. Insightful commentary on the poems’ meanings and on ways to read them aloud, as well as notes on their history and background, are found on every page. Whether long lived like Shakespeare’s sonnets or newly-hewn like Carolyn Forché’s “Taking Off My Clothes,” Love Poetry Out Loud makes each poem as fresh and inspiring as the first time it was uttered.

Bessie's Resurrection gives voice to Richard Wright's fictional character Bessie Mears from his novel Native Son (1940). These poems offer Bessie room to articulte her experiences as an African American woman and how she suffes in her unenviable position, powerless and unseen. Here, Bessie's fictive character is self actualized by two historical African American trailblazers: Bessie Coleman and Bessie Smith who lived during the same time period when Bessie's story takes place. These poems, which reimagine their lives, are a microcosim of the lived experiences of African American women who face violence, limitations and challenges, Their voices and bodies are resurrected to articulate their ideas of worth to claim a space to speak not only for themselves but also for their sisters who are voiceless. Their lives become three songs which are analogous to the sections in Wright's novel: Fear, Flight and Fate. While Bessie Mears supplies the soundtrack to Bigger's story, it is Bessie Smith's blues sung by Colie Aziza which serve as the soundtrack for Bessie's Resurrection. This collection of poems, written for all three Bessie's, honors Black women as the necessary backbone to the fight against their voices and their bodies being buried alive.

Jenny Nixon uses bold phrasing and syntax to record a life lived in and around Sydney s bohemian culture and lesbian and gay communities from the 1970s to the present. Her poetry is atmospheric, immediate and celebrates awareness gained, while honorouring the losses and counting the costs, including deaths of family friends and muses taken by age, AIDS or addictions. Although mainly narrative in style, Nixon s work doesn t shy away from political protest. It cuts close to the bone, and uses the language of the everyday in what is an accessible and moving collection. This collection will appeal to readers who like contemporary, no-nonsense poetry that isn t afraid of tackling the big issues.

Nicolai (anglicised Nicholas in this translation) Ivanov, a middle-aged public servant, is unhappy. His wife Anna, disinherited by her family after converting from Judaism, is dying of tuberculosis. He is deeply in debt. And his best friend’s daughter is infatuated with him. Comedy and tragedy ensue in truly Chekhovian fashion. An example of the young Chekhov’s maturing style, Ivanov is an early harbinger of themes that would recur throughout his work.
