Sinopse

"Empire State" explores the remarkable story of the Empire State Building, a symbol of American ingenuity and a defining feature of New York City's skyline. More than just architecture, the book examines how this skyscraper became a cultural icon, reflecting the ambition and innovation of a nation. The construction occurred during a pivotal time in American history, between the roaring twenties and the Great Depression, embodying a race to the top driven by corporate rivalry. The book highlights how the building's Art Deco design and pioneering engineering feats, like its advanced elevator system, contributed to its enduring appeal.

This architectural history unfolds chronologically, starting with the building's conception and construction, spotlighting key figures and the thousands of laborers involved. It then delves into its architectural and engineering innovations, discussing how the Empire State Building redefined urban development in New York. Finally, the book analyzes its pervasive presence in pop culture, examining its portrayal in films and literature, and assessing its continuing relevance in the 21st century, emphasizing its role in sustainable urban development.

By drawing on diverse sources, including architectural plans and film archives, "Empire State" provides a comprehensive look at this landmark. It connects the building's story to broader themes of urban studies, media studies, and economic history, enriching the reader's understanding of its cultural significance.

Africa may have given rise to the first human beings, and Egypt probably gave rise to the first great civilizations, which continue to fascinate modern societies across the globe nearly 5,000 years later. From the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Ancient Egyptians produced several wonders of the world, revolutionized architecture and construction, created some of the world’s first systems of mathematics and medicine, and established language and art that spread across the known world. With world-famous leaders like King Tut and Cleopatra, it’s no wonder that today’s world has so many Egyptologists.
Although the Egyptians may not have passed their civilization directly on to later peoples, the key elements that comprised Egyptian civilization, including their religion, early ideas of state, and art and architecture, can be seen in other pre-modern civilizations. Indeed, since Egyptian civilization represented some fundamental human concepts, a study of their culture can be useful when trying to understand many other pre-modern cultures.
Part of the reason Egyptian history is so intriguing is because it is so enigmatic – even today, despite the wealth of written materials and countless monuments, Egyptologists constantly uncover more mysteries about ancient Egypt, even if many of those mysteries are somewhat mundane and appeal more to academics. For example, historians still debate precise chronologies of dynasties, theological nuances, and architectural details.
One such mystery that shows no signs of going away is the history of the archeological site known as Amarna, which is actually the name of the modern village that is closest to the ancient Egyptian city of Akhet-Aten. Akhet-Aten was built during the reign of one of Egypt’s most enigmatic pharaohs, Akhenaten (ruled ca. 1364-1347 BCE), and modern archaeological studies have shown it was hastily built and almost as quickly abandoned.
Although the city had a brief lifespan, it was vitally important at the time, so much so that the late Eighteenth Dynasty has been named the Amarna Period by modern scholars. The importance is reflected in the changes that Akhenaten attempted to make to Egyptian religion, art, architecture, and society, all of which can be found among the ruins of Amarna, from texts that described the Aten as the one true god to the depictions of the royal family that were like nothing seen before or after in ancient Egyptian art. An examination of Akhenaten’s rule and the life of the city of Akhet-Aten has helped modern scholars unravel some of the mysteries of the Amarna Period, but many still remain.
Akhenaten and Amarna: The History of Ancient Egypt’s Most Mysterious Pharaoh and His Capital City chronicles what’s known and unknown about the Egyptian city and the pharaoh who was responsible for it. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Amarna like never before.

  • Grading for Growth - A Guide to Alternative Grading Practices that Promote Authentic Learning and Student Engagement in Higher Education - cover

Grading for Growth - A Guide to...

    David Clarke, Robert Talbert

Are you satisfied with your current and traditional grading system? Does it accurately reflect your students’ learning and progress? Can it be gamed? Does it lead to grade-grubbing and friction with your students? The authors of this book, David Clark and Robert Talbert – two professors of mathematics with input from colleagues across disciplines and institutions – offer readers a fundamentally more effective and authentic approach to grading that they have implemented for over a decade. Grading for Growth helps educators navigate the complicated landscape of grading and assessment and includes grading systems such as Standards-Based Grading, Specifications Grading, and Ungrading.

Recognizing that traditional grading penalizes students in the learning process by depriving them of the formative feedback that is fundamental to improvement, the authors offer alternative strategies that encourage revision and growth. Alternative grading is concerned with students’ eventual level of understanding. This leads to big changes: Students take time to review past failures and learn from them. Conversations shift from “why did I lose a point for this” to productive discussions of content and process.Alternative grading can be used successfully at any level, in any situation, and any discipline, in classes that range from seminars to large multi-section lectures. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to alternative grading, beginning with a framework and rationale for implementation and evidence of its effectiveness. The heart of the book includes detailed examples – including variations on Standards-Based Grading, Specifications Grading, and ungrading -- of how alternative grading practices are used in all kinds of classroom environments, disciplines and institutions with a focus on first-hand accounts by faculty who share their practices and experience. The book includes a workbook chapter that takes readers through a step-by-step process for building a prototype of their own alternatively graded class and ends with concrete, practical, time-tested advice for new practitioners.

The underlying principles of alternative grading involve:Evaluating student work using clearly defined and context-appropriate content standards.Giving students helpful, actionable feedback.Summarizing the feedback with marks that indicate progress rather than arbitrary numbers.Allowing students to revise without penalty, using the feedback they receive, until the standards are met or exceeded.

This book is intended for faculty interested in exploring alternative forms of learning assessment as well as those currently using alternative grading systems who are looking for ideas and options to refine practice.

This audiobook is skillfully read by Michael Hacker, and was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont. Audio engineering by Jonah Rosenberg.
