Beschreibung

"Empire State" explores the remarkable story of the Empire State Building, a symbol of American ingenuity and a defining feature of New York City's skyline. More than just architecture, the book examines how this skyscraper became a cultural icon, reflecting the ambition and innovation of a nation. The construction occurred during a pivotal time in American history, between the roaring twenties and the Great Depression, embodying a race to the top driven by corporate rivalry. The book highlights how the building's Art Deco design and pioneering engineering feats, like its advanced elevator system, contributed to its enduring appeal.

This architectural history unfolds chronologically, starting with the building's conception and construction, spotlighting key figures and the thousands of laborers involved. It then delves into its architectural and engineering innovations, discussing how the Empire State Building redefined urban development in New York. Finally, the book analyzes its pervasive presence in pop culture, examining its portrayal in films and literature, and assessing its continuing relevance in the 21st century, emphasizing its role in sustainable urban development.

By drawing on diverse sources, including architectural plans and film archives, "Empire State" provides a comprehensive look at this landmark. It connects the building's story to broader themes of urban studies, media studies, and economic history, enriching the reader's understanding of its cultural significance.

Black artisans have long been central to American art and design, creating innovative and highly desired work against immense odds. Atlanta-based chairmaker and scholar Robell Awake explores the stories behind ten cornerstones of Black craft, including:

    ● The celebrated wooden chairs of Richard Poynor, an enslaved craftsman who began a dynasty of Tennessee chairmakers.

    ● The elegant wrought-iron gates of Philip Simmons, seen to this day throughout Charleston, South Carolina, whose work features motifs from the Low Country.

    ● The inventive assemblage art and yard shows of Joe Minter, James Hampton, Bessie Harvey, and others, who draw on African spiritual traditions to create large-scale improvisational art installations.

From the enslaved potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina, to Ann Lowe, the couture dressmaker who made Jacqueline Kennedy's wedding dress, to Gullah Geechee sweetgrass basket makers, to the celebrated quilters of Gee's Bend, A Short History of Black Craft in Ten Objects illuminates the work of generations of Black craftspeople, foregrounding their enduring contributions to American craft.

Nothing New But Abortive Gasp -...

„Nothing New But 'Abortive Gasp'“ portrays the short-lived, controversial Hamburg electro-industrial band Abortive Gasp (1987–1989). Founded by Harry Luehr (instruments) and Tim Paal (vocals) with rotating guests, they stood out for their high improvisation – unusual in the electronic scene. Their sound mixed early dub, parodies of Front 242/Ministry, and ironic-anarchic elements. As „Hamburg Bunker Bands“ (with Girls Under Glass), they played clubs like Kir or Stairways near the Schanzenviertel Flakbunker – a refuge from scene hostility.
The name „Abortive Gasp“ (antinatalist undertones) triggered constant debates as an alleged attack on family norms, though the band never took an explicit stance on abortion. Harry Luehr later: „The name can be programmatic, but it was more a vague premonition of our future paths.“ Childlessness was viewed as failure in the late 80s; today it’s normal (career, pets, free sexuality as balance).
Their openly apolitical attitude – „We don't need any moral standards!“ – isolated them in left-leaning Hamburg indie circles; international supporters (Don Campau, Brian Duguid) were more open. Despite provocations, it ended in 1989: Final gig supporting Borghesia at Kir. „End, out, over … Break successfully completed.“
The feature contrasts the era’s taboo-breaking openness (Skinny Puppy, Marilyn Manson hailed as subversive) with today’s sensitivity: Creative edge now only accepted with „clean“ political alignment – exactly what Abortive Gasp refused. It illuminates the left’s shift toward state reconciliation, rising sex-negativity in progressive spaces, and why apolitical-provocative art barely survives today – especially in Gothic/Darkwave scenes demanding explicit stances.
This is the English version as primary/supplementary chapter; the German version („Nichts Neues außer 'Abortive Gasp'“) precedes it as the first chapter.

Trump: Modern Shaman - An Unparalleled Analysis of America's Most Controversial Leader
Trump didn't just break America's political rules - he revealed them as illusions. This is an outsider's discovery of how an unlikely shaman transformed the world's most powerful nation.
Trump follows ancient patterns of leadership that modern politics has forgotten. Through raw charisma and intuitive genius, he tapped into psychological forces that reshaped America's soul. This analysis reveals why millions found his message irresistible—and why his critics still don't understand what hit them.
Written by a non-American observer free from Washington's tribal warfare, this work examines how the deeply flawed Trump could be the very hero America needs in its darkest hour.
Note: This book offers a clear-eyed view of both his strengths and limitations but is ultimately strangely pro-Trump.
